Re: Bad Advice
(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)But I didn't really mean to insult her, I just wished to indicate that she was in the wrong
Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaah but she kind of wasn't wrong...? ;-) Thanks for the context. So, are you saying you think your tone makes words OK/not OK (i.e., neutral vs. bad)? Because people are not generally good at picking up on tone, as a rule.
Did your Hitler remark at least get a laugh?
Re: Bad Advice
No, it isn't about tone; I'm probably worse at picking up on it than most of the people around me. It's just that I deprived these words of their negative connotations and used them as neutral. In my books, "idiot" has never been an insult.
As to the Hitler remark, yes. The entire class huffed with laughter :)
Re: Bad Advice
(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 12:09 am (UTC)(link)There's a point where you can't be disingenuous about how other people react to words with negative connotations, though. Unless you're around certain people long enough that they know that's how you talk casually.
