I think watching the anime is fine, and I say this as a dedicated manga fan. For anyone really looking to get into the series, and wanting to be able to keep up to date on all the spoilers and the current storyline, but who also wants to watch the anime, I'd recommend watching up to episode 20 in the anime, and then continuing on from chapter 28 in the manga.

Um, I'd just like to clarify, I recommend stopping from episode 20, because the anime starts making a lot more notable divergences from the manga canon from around that point. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's easier to understand the manga storyline if you read earlier from the chosen ending point of the anime (which was around chapter 34)
