(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 08:07 am (UTC)(link)"it’s stereotyping us and presenting an exotified picture of us to the world, where we’re once again turned into nothing but exotic Others to be ogled by the majority." kristoff is a... character that happens. He's never othered, he's never seen as an outsider, he's not even comic relief (anymore than the rest of the characters are). The point does stand that he's never specified to be Sami or not, so it's not outright representation and it's just word-of-god by this point. It's their prerogative not to support the movie, though. As someone who isn't white, though, I don't get what it is that they're asking of it-- there's not a lot of cultural elements in the movie besides 'fantasy and also a kingdom'. It's not Pocahontas or Hunchback of Notre Dame; those movies dealt directly with racial issues so there was a lot to fuck up in them.
(also they're flatly wrong about the feministic tones of the movie. Anna and Elsa have A LOT of agency and the focus is always on them and them dealing with the consequences of their actions and learning about themselves and their relationship. It's still not the Snow Queen, and it's sad that they claim it was inspired by the fairytale because if they'd just said it was an original story it'd stand well on its own)
