when you get a fic rec...
(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:01 am (UTC)(link)I find it to be about half and half...Sometimes you get a gem, and sometimes it's a bit less discriminating. (Like, I'll ask for 'gen fic focused on character z' and people will rec whatever comes to mind, maybe without quality control, lol)
How about it, fs? Were the last recs you received all that you hoped for?
Re: when you get a fic rec...
Not to mention I rather dislike "normal people" AUs, and those inevitably crop up in rec lists quite a bit.

Re: when you get a fic rec...
For example, someone could rec me a Harry Potter story and I'll love it but there's a good chance I would have never found it because even today the fandom is MASSIVE.
Re: when you get a fic rec...
Haven't really asked for recs in quite a while though. For the most part I've just been browsing rec journals and folks' pinboards/delicious for things to check out. I find I become more interested in something when these people will talk about the fic, what it's about (without spoiling it ofc), or get excited about it, rather than just a link with a one-sentence summary telling me there's a ship in it.

I like hearing why people loved the fic. It makes me want to reread old ones. I reread "On a Clear Day" by Perfica and am now going back through their works (Aqua Fresca! Such an oldie). It's bringing back all these snarry HP feelings.
I also received a rec for a movie I've never heard about, but I plan to read it. If I really like it, I'll watch the movie :) (Fic + movie rec = win!)
Maybe not all are winners, but you find a lot of gems too that are worth it.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)It was about 6 fics I had download?
