when you get a fic rec...

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Are you usually satisfied by it, or is it more often a letdown?

I find it to be about half and half...Sometimes you get a gem, and sometimes it's a bit less discriminating. (Like, I'll ask for 'gen fic focused on character z' and people will rec whatever comes to mind, maybe without quality control, lol)

How about it, fs? Were the last recs you received all that you hoped for?

Usually a letdown. Mostly because I go searching for fic myself, and only start asking for recs once I've run out of decent reading material of my own, so any good recs I receive I've usually already seen.

Not to mention I rather dislike "normal people" AUs, and those inevitably crop up in rec lists quite a bit.

I always love when people rec me stuff here. The majority of the time I read them and enjoy them.

A mixed bag. I follow a few people who I can nearly guarantee I will enjoy their recs, but as for general or random recs it's always a toss up.

I usually enjoy them! Even if it is something I have read before, I will read it again if it was good enough to rec. :3

I wish I bookmarked the fics I read like you do. You are always good for a rec or two that I enjoy.

It depends on the fandom. If the fandom is small, I tend to have most of what I like. I usually only find new stories if it's recced to someone's personal journal.

For example, someone could rec me a Harry Potter story and I'll love it but there's a good chance I would have never found it because even today the fandom is MASSIVE.

It's 50/50. If I know the person giving them, and what ideas they generally like or are entertained by, it's a bit of a tell for me to prepare my back-button reflexes or give it a chance and chug through it. I haven't asked for recs in quite a while though.

Haven't really asked for recs in quite a while though. For the most part I've just been browsing rec journals and folks' pinboards/delicious for things to check out. I find I become more interested in something when these people will talk about the fic, what it's about (without spoiling it ofc), or get excited about it, rather than just a link with a one-sentence summary telling me there's a ship in it.

Generally happy with them, since i tend to say stuff like 'please no hooker fic!' or whatever when asking for a rec, so i usually get things i'm interested in reading.

Pretty much always a letdown. I don't know if I'm just really picky or if I don't know what I want.

I've only asked for recs once. The first reply I received was for a horrible, creeptastic mess of a fic that the anon claimed was ~wonderful~. And that's why I've only asked once.

I don't ask for them much so I don't get them much, but if I get any I'm usually happy that someone thought about my request and thought of something to rec.

More often than not a let-down if I'm asking for a rec, but weirdly enough usually a really great fic if I read a rec responding to someone else's request.

I love asking for recs on fs. Yesterday, I asked for recs and got some fics I read before and some new. I reread some of the ones I had and am now reading one I hadn't.

I like hearing why people loved the fic. It makes me want to reread old ones. I reread "On a Clear Day" by Perfica and am now going back through their works (Aqua Fresca! Such an oldie). It's bringing back all these snarry HP feelings.

I also received a rec for a movie I've never heard about, but I plan to read it. If I really like it, I'll watch the movie :) (Fic + movie rec = win!)

Maybe not all are winners, but you find a lot of gems too that are worth it.

Half and half! I read all the fics FS rec'd me for my holiday, I stopped reading one of them, enjoyed most of them more or less and for one of them I am going to certainly check out the author some more.

It was about 6 fics I had download?
