Stress tips?

[personal profile] khronos_keeper 2013-12-10 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Heyoooo guys.

So it's the end of the semester, I have precious little to do before I can just fuck off and go home for the holidays, but there's one problem. I am wound up with such a level of stress that my own brain and body is sabotaging itself to a worrying degree, and I need to calm the fuck down before I explode.

So I come to ask for advice. What are some really good stress relief tips? Got anything unusual but effective?

I'll give one-- stand outside in the cold. Find a beautiful spot, and stand in the cold, and let yourself become still. The cold will distract your mind away from all of the other million little niggling worries, and the beauty will attract your attention, and let you be calm. If you have a neighborhood with Christmas lights, this would be a good time to go check them out.

I've actually done that thing with the cold too! Cold air always makes me feel better when I'm anxious.

My main thing is to make sure I'm getting plenty of sleep. I also make a schedule that includes both things I need to do and fun things. Regular breaks help and the schedule can help keep me from spending too long on either one of those categories.

Full-body scratching, whether you itch or not. Back, arms, legs. It's better if someone else does it, but if you don't have someone that close to you, it's not half bad done solo either (back isn't really possible though). Might not do much for everyone, but that was my main source of therapy for many years starting in kindergarten.

yoga. There's a yoga studio behind my house and if I have a stressful day at work, I'll just pop over no matter what the class is and it'll relax me entirely.

also, my friend showed me this and I haven't really gone through it yet, but it's amazing for all kinds of ambient noises: http://mynoise.net/

Somehow when it become stressful times (like right now) I go back to old fandoms and reread manga, anime, fics, doujins, etc.

Exercise.

No, seriously, this one actually has medical relevance. If you're stressed, go jogging.

Running.
Walking.
Going to the park at the middle of the night and swinging on the swings until I get sick.
Going to church (either to attend services or just walking around).
Going to the beach (but I'm lucky enough to live ten minutes away from one.)
Talking to friends.
Listening to music.
Playing with my pet mice.
Fanfic.

...Pretty much the only thing I don't do to relieve stress is actually do my schoolwork. *slinks away*

I was walking my dog about two nights ago and was wrapped up in worries and kind of resentful I had to be out late in the cold. We came around the corner and my breath kind of punched out of my lungs and I literally thought "The stars have settled into the trees,". For a second my brain was actually convinced the tree was cradling the stars as they slept in its branches. It was awe inspiring and tear inducingly beautiful.

Then I realized it was just my neighbor's snowflake projector knocked out of alignment.

Working out works for me. Namely repetitive cardio on a machine. I think I'm going to have to just buy myself an elliptical someday and jump on it when I want to yell at people (attempting to drive to the gym when I'm in a bad mood is a bad idea).

It seems counter-intuitive, but: exercise. A brisk walk around the block, 15-20 on the treadmill/exercise bike, or even turning on some loud music and dancing like an idiot.

My doctor said that stress reactions can trigger your body's fight vs. flight instinct, only because you're not really in danger, all of those impulses have nowhere to go. Physical exercise, even briefly, helps burn off that extra energy quickly and basically convinces your body and brain to calm down again.
