huh, I thought the reason people were boycotting the movie was that it took a female-centric fairytale with no romance and made it into a heavily-male-based romance story

Yeah... but it didn't actually do that.

It's a story about sisters.

Yeah there are male characters, but the movie revolves around the relationship between two sisters.

That's good to know, actually! It appears to have differed greatly from peoples' predictions based on info they had before the release.

Not to spoil it, but the movie essentially skewers the romance trope in two ways. And the true love that saves the day at the end ISN'T romance, so that's fun, too.

I haven't seen it yet, but I read the IMDB synopsis (because I was thinking I wasn't going to see it) and went "oh wow, I did not expect Disney to do that."

Plot-wise it's interesting, imo! Still not sold on the aesthetics but that's what DVD rental is for.

Ding. Ding. Ding.

Heavily male based?

The two sisters carried the plot. The guys' plot was dependent on them and one of them was missing from the film for the bulk of the story.

Actually the romance wasn't that big a deal, and they seemed to be kind of lampooning earlier Disney movies where it's always about romance and there's a wedding in the end. Tangled did that a bit too, with the narration at the end showing that they didn't get married right away. Frozen took further punches at it, but I won't spoil. I think if they keep doing this it could get annoying, but maybe they're in a transition period right now.

See, that's the problem with boycotting things with only minimal information.

All of those complaints are way off. Yeah, there's romance (it's a Disney movie), but the ladies are the stars.

which goes to show you people shouldn't boycott based on something that isn't out yet when they start whining.

There are males, and there is romance, that's about as close as it came to such a story.

The romance is subplot tier at most.

Yeah, it seems like Frozen's marketing wasn't the most accurate thing ... though, unlike Brave, it turned out to be better than what was expected after so many shots of that damn snowman, who I hear isn't half as bad as expected (haven't seen it yet but I plan to soon).

I think I will too, since everyone's saying it's so different from what was expected. My family sometimes goes out to movies when we're all home which we will be soon, so I'll suggest that one, especially since Pixar movies tend to be among the only ones that all five of us want to see ^^
