I dunno, I can't remember canon descriptions of characters. Like young Sirius Black, definitely hot. But I have no idea what the books say about him.
If I like a character I tend to picture them as at least aesthetically attractive. Honestly I'm a little put off by books that make a point of describing the protagonist as plain or unattractive (though I'm more put off by books that overemphasize the protagonist's beauty) because I'm not really interested in that level of realism. Maybe that makes me a superficial reader, I don't much care.
