My sister got on my back about the whole "KATNISS IS A WOC" thing, and I think is still kind of pissed that I insisted that olive-skinned COULD mean a white person. I don't disagree she could be a WOC and that the whole "white actresses only" thing is pretty shitty, but I don't think that the books say explicitly "Katniss is a WOC" and it doesn't make the movies themselves terrible.

all i can think is that the people who think olive-skinned can't equal white have never met anyone from the mediterranean region of europe before. one of my coworkers from my last job was greek and she got dark as hell in the summer when she was out in the sun, but she was still white.

That's what I told her, but she insisted that olive-skinned could only mean POC.

honestly, i shouldn't be that surprised, because i have another friend who is italian and she always gets people assuming that she must be hispanic or mixed because a white person couldn't possibly have skin that dark.

I have seriously only heard olive skinned used to describe people that region if you don't count tumblr. So I always assumed anybody with that descriptor is ethnically resembling people of that area.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. It never even occurred to me that people would see that descriptor and think anything OTHER than Mediterranean.

This is what I picture as well.

I first heard it used to describe a Hispanic kid, so I always associated it with Hispanic people. I guess it differs from person to person.

Same. Marco in Animorphs was the first person I saw it applied to.

Hahaha, that's exactly the character I was referring to.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Well many hispanic people are actually descended from Spaniards and Portuguese people, so yeah...

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Sigh, the woe of being a mediterranean with pale as fuck skin. One's always forgotten.
