So either I'm REALLY cut off from Tumblr SJWs or I missed something here...namely, racism.
And now I'm hearing all about how people are upset about racism in this movie, and I'm kind of wondering where the hell this is coming from.
Have...have I managed to somehow cut myself off that much from Tumblr SJWs? Am I really just following mature SJAs? I didn't even know that was possible! o.O

So Tumblr SJWs may actually have made the whole thing 'worse' by making people curious enough about the movie to go see it.

If, however, the work features a prominent darker-skinned character or more "PoCs" than pasty-faced folks, then its cultural appropriation.
So basically, it's not that you can't win either way, it's that they've already decided you lose before you even start filming or writing, so it's just best to stay the heck away from Tumblr and make the best and art and entertainment you can.
It's as bad as insisting that one refer to a British woman as an "African American" because she just so happens to have a certain pigmentation.
Related: I don't know why they use "PoC" all the time like that, last I heard calling black folks colored in America was out of vogue because it smacks of 1920s racism. And isn't lumping all these innumerable cultures and ethnicities into one category defined by their not-whiteness kind of, well, racist?
Re: So either I'm REALLY cut off from Tumblr SJWs or I missed something here...namely, racism.
I think it was meant to replace "non-white". I can kind of get the sentiment behind it, but I also think it's incredibly stupid. The overwhelming vast majority of racial issues trace back to being "not white (enough)", so while I can see why people wouldn't want to define themselves by a race they are not, it seems to be a ridiculous thing to bring back an old racist terminology over.
But then many would say I'm not the most reliable on this topic, because I tend to side-eye most cultural appropriation issues, too. Not because I don't think cultural appropriation isn't a thing - I'm of Indian descent, so I see my ancestral culture appropriated a lot - but because cultural appropriation as a social justice movement tends to ignore the history of culture in general. Namely, most of the stuff in "our" cultures started out in another culture anyway. Some people have started to try to differentiate between cultural appropriation and cultural exchange, but even then, most of it tends to smack of "no! bad white people! my brown-people cultural aspects/psychosocial artifacts, MINE!" so even though I actually have a lot to say about it on both sides, I largely stay away from it.
Besides, most people would say I'm "not a real Indian" anyway (in many ways, including me), so I'm saving myself a few headaches by mostly staying out of that, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)But then, I look pretty white, so maybe I just haven't had enough racism directed towards me to have strong feelings about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 01:32 am (UTC)(link)Though what's "reasonable" and not is greatly contested of course, but one useful test is if people into equality and activism outside of tumblr would tend to think it was reasonable or ridiculous, might be one indicator.
Non-activists laughing at the idealism and perceived righteousness of activists is something I'm pretty solidly over by now, and there's definitely some of that going on on f!s along with the wftery aspect of some of the SJW unreasonableness.
