i'm betting that some of the people who are complaining about this aren't necessarily commenting that he's overemotional in general but rather that he's overemotional for holmes specifically

depends on how you interpret acd i guess.

He wasn't, though. I'm pretty sure I know what scenes the OP is talking about. Sherlock is openly acknowledging his feelings, but he's not particularly emotional while he's doing it. IMO, the level of emotion was entirely appropriate for a modern adaptation.

Holmes was never unemotional though, he was just always very in control of his emotions, especially ones like fear or sadness.

Victorians had a bit of a crooked bar when it came to what qualified as unemotional -- you were always supposed to indicate them, but they were never supposed to sway you. They were vital tools of deliberate communication, but all naturalness had to be ruthlessly suppressed. I guess people argue about how to translate them now ;)
