I almost always disagree when fandom thinks a character is being too emotional and this is no exception.

I like when characters are emotional. It's a nice change from all the emotionally constipated protagonists that writers seem to love.

me too! I love emotional characters, especially if they aren't sorry that they're emmotional.

I do as well; especially because I feel like Elementary has hit the right balance of "has emotions, expresses them as necessary" and "let me tell you about the emotions I am having right now in endless detail so that you can understand the depths of my pain."

(admittedly, the second one is more of a "bad fanfic" cliche then a tv show cliche I hope, I don't watch a lot of tv any more, so maybe I'm being a little mean, but I just can't stand it when characters start to get actually, genuinely "emo".)

Yup, I do enjoy emotionally constipated characters too but man, not when they're everywhere.

It's not like he's friends with his feelings. he just has them.

You're only just now realizing how emotionally crippled the internet can seem?

Heh. Thank you.

I can understand this, as I've seen someone complain about Katniss "freaking out all the time" (referring to her panic attacks) during the movie Catching Fire. Despite the fact that it HEAVILY implies she developed PTSD from fighting in the Hunger Games, which is extremely plausible.

You can't expect EVERYONE to be educated about mental illness and the sheer bullshit some people actually have to deal with everyday (and I say this as a neurotypical person) but it bothers me sometimes

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, seriously? People say that? I mean, I feel like it's everything short of written on your face as a viewer that she's suffering from PTSD, especially when she's in the arena... Also she really doesn't express her feelings that much, apart from her actual panic attacks.

... I'm seriously baffled and disconcerted. If people think panic attacks and calm expressions of emotion are "overly emotional," then I shudder to think what they must think of most of the world, including their friends...

The funny/sad thing is that those people probably over-react at the slightest provocation.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
Reminds me of people calling Samus "hysterical" when she froze up when meeting Ridley again in Other M. Don't get me wrong, Other M was a bad game, but some game magazine even brought in former U.S. soldiers and they said "yeah, it looks like she's got PTSD" and fandom still denied it.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? All I see are complaints about the love triangle. I can't believe people are complaining about her dealing with trauma. Are these the same people who are all excited over that Capitol-inspired makeup line?

Secret 11 - Elementary

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-11 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Sherlock Holmes, from the TV show "Elementary". He is a man with light olive skin, short dark brown hair and a slight beard and mustache. He is wearing a white shirt and a brown jacket. He is lying on the floor, with many books scattered around him. He is resting his head on a small pile of books. He has his hands resting on his stomach, palms down, with his fingers interlaced.]

It bugs me when people describe him as being "emotional" and imply it's Out Of Character for Holmes. Did we even see the same episodes? It wasn't like he was curled up on the floor in the fetal position weeping about his feelings, he simply stated them very matter of factly and acknowledged he had them. I worry a little about how emotionally crippled fandom is if this is what "emo" looks like now.

i'm betting that some of the people who are complaining about this aren't necessarily commenting that he's overemotional in general but rather that he's overemotional for holmes specifically

depends on how you interpret acd i guess.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
He wasn't, though. I'm pretty sure I know what scenes the OP is talking about. Sherlock is openly acknowledging his feelings, but he's not particularly emotional while he's doing it. IMO, the level of emotion was entirely appropriate for a modern adaptation.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
Holmes was never unemotional though, he was just always very in control of his emotions, especially ones like fear or sadness.

Victorians had a bit of a crooked bar when it came to what qualified as unemotional -- you were always supposed to indicate them, but they were never supposed to sway you. They were vital tools of deliberate communication, but all naturalness had to be ruthlessly suppressed. I guess people argue about how to translate them now ;)

I'm betting they're complaining that he's overemotional compared to Benedict Cumberbatch.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
People also need to remember that it used to be part of Joan's job to get Sherlock to contemplate his feelings and talk about them. I think that not only does that history make Sherlock comfortable sharing his feelings with Joan, but he also has learned that it's easier just to sraight up say how he feels rather than wait for her to try to draw it out of him.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this in comparison to the books or to BBC Sherlock? It seems like fans of the latter like to complain about Elementary.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
I usually agree with the sentiment, but Elementary!Holmes is one character where it just bugs me a bit.

Possibly because that level of emotion/that many emotional moments wouldn't happen (or only happen very rarely) in any adaptation where Watson was a man. Like the "you are exceptional," and "what's different about me is you" etc lines. Especially since they've only known each other a year. People complain that lines like that are OOC nonsense when it's written in slash fic.

I get the feeling that he's softened up a bit too much because they don't think a woman would put up with his behaviour the same way as a man without it making her looking like either a harpy or a doormat. Maybe I'm imagining it, but there's just this slightly uncomfortable undercurrent of "nope nope can't let him treat a woman as badly as the Watsons of all the recent adaptations get treated."
Or maybe I'm wrong and they just felt like making him nicer in this adaptation idk
