It's not "unfeminist" to seek comfort. I know it's not always feasible/prudent to speak your mind OP but I wish you the courage and/or luck to get into a better situation soon.

This.

Good luck in future situations, OP.

How is this unfeminist? This isn't unfeminist. It's human.

Aw, that's not unfeminest at all. I hope you get your comfort. :(

There's nothing stupid or wrong with it for Pete's sake. It's simply human and relatable, and I imagine that everyone has at some time or other looked for something similar. And the idea of Watson and Holmes in that role is very agreeable so all told what I'm saying is that I like your secret.

I gotta admit there's kind of a big wish-fulfillment aspect to the whole trope of "frightened confused woman goes to seek help from Sherlock Holmes" thing. It's sooooo comforting. But IMO it's not a female-only thing. Who wouldn't want to know a couple of guys like Holmes and Watson to turn to if you were ever in trouble and confused and didn't know what to do or whether you were just going mad?

It's just that guys aren't "supposed" to want other people to sweep in heroically to help them, they're "supposed" to always be the guys who do the heroics, never the guys who need help. Which is just as bogus as the idea that women shouldn't want to be the hero who helps people, and should only want heroes to help them.

/sorry if this is sort of rambling. Got superheroes on the brain.

This. The original stories are *full* of male clients who arrive at Baker Street in a highly emotional state, feeling helpless and desperate and begging for Holmes's help.

In fact, now that I think of it, the female clients are often portrayed as relatively calm, with a practical, sensible attitude.

Secret 4 - Sherlock Holmes, John Watson

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-12 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is an old drawing of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson talking with a woman? The woman is holding her hands to her head while the two look on in interest.]

I feel stupid and unfeminist for saying so, but one of my most comforting fantasies is going to see Holmes and Watson and getting their reassurance and protection from all the nasty guys I know who I'm scared of but who I can't do anything about.

I believe she's pulling back her veil and the emotion the two of them are conveying is concern. I recognize the story the pic's from.

Isn't it Paget's illustration of Helen Stoner from "The Speckled Band"? "It is fear, Mr. Holmes. It is terror." One of ACD's more memorable lines.

Thank you, anon! I will add this to page 2.

I'm sorry you don't feel safe, OP. :( If you can, see if you can develop some kind of support/checking-in system among your friends/people you trust so that you can have some form of concrete protection and assistance, even if it's not from a bamf supergenius.

Look anon, you're not a fictional character. You're a real person. There is not some weird feminist tribunal off-screen critiquing your character arc and making sure you measure up to the menz in the story of your life. Your moments of weakness don't need to be compared to anything, they simply are what they are. As long as you're not damaging anyone, you have nothing to be ashamed of.

But I hope you come to a better place.

When I was going through a particularly difficult time in my life, I fantasized (and even dreamed) that Sam from Quantum Leap would jump into my life and fix it. So I not only understand your feelings but endorse them.

Holmes and Watson would give you the comfort and protection you needed, and they'd be utterly polite and respectful about it, too. You wouldn't get anything demeaning or a weak-little-girl-can't-take-care-of-herself attitude from those two.

I've had a somewhat similar fantasy myself, actually.
