I don't mind if it's an AU, but it can make an author look pretty silly if they have people from a certain culture or time celebrating a holiday that isn't/wasn't celebrated in that situation.

CANNONIACALLY!

I have more to say, but I need to go to sleep.

That caught my attention too

On that note...

Does anyone else have problems pronouncing "canonical"? I sometimes read tags out loud and this one just twists my tongue.

Didn't think so, then I tried saying it out loud, which proved me wrong... It works perfectly in my mind.

Can-ON-ih-cull. There ya go.

Re: CANNONIACALLY!

canonically + maniacally = canoniacally. LOL, looks like a useful term, to me.

I'm also fond of "tragesty." Tragedy + travesty.

It's cannoniaclly, which is even better. Simultaneously in the manner of a cannon and a maniac. Fantastic word.

Secret 8 - Fanfiction, fanart

[Picture is black text over a blank white background.]

I wish people wouldn't make characters participate in fanfic/fanart social events when they wouldn't canonically do.

Looking at you, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I'll make all your faves go to prom if I want to and you can't stop me.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
lmao drag ha anon!

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
da

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here but I'm now imagining the SuperWhoLock trifecta at prom in full drag and it's a beautiful mental image, so thank you for making my night.

The Pied Piper Duck Show is something all fanfictions and fanart should celebrate and take seriously, regardless of canon location.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
thst sounds awesome tbh. is it real or did you just make it up?

also apparently australia has duck beauty pageants. this is something i feel compelled to share with the world.

you forgot to include valentine`s in your list
and yeah, i have to skip tons of these in many fandoms I frequent

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
I get ya. It's not a big deal to me, but I get a bit... 'but Jesus has never existed in this world!' when I see Christmas fic in an non-AU setting. Or when Father Christmas pops up in Narnia...

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind a Christmas-like celebration if it's just supposed to be a generic holiday for their winter solstice or some in-world historical event. Lots of cultures have solstice celebrations, and as long as it isn't specifically 'Christmas' I'll usually give it a pass.

(And in Narnia's defense, Aslan essentially is lion-shaped Jesus.)

Plus the first humans to live in Narnia were from Victorian London. It's just about hand-wavable that Christmas celebrations might have come into Narnia with them.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't Father Christmas...actually show up in Narnia in canon, though? In The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, doesn't he come whizzing by while all the kids are hiding under a snowbank hoping the sleigh they can hear isn't the White Witch's? And everybody gets a present but Edmund, who, being po-faced and also addicted to magic candy, had at that point gone to sell them all out.

I avoid holiday fic / fanart like the plague, unless holidays specifically have something to do with the canon. (Like the Nightmare Before Christmas.)

It just makes me cringe really hard,
even if it isn't particularly bad or OOC.

It's just fanart for fun. The artists aren't proclaiming it canon.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-13 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I usually don't mind if it's fanart (or silly official promo art even). If it's a feast for the eyes, bring it on.

And just so you know, sometimes characters canonically celebrate holidays that realistically they wouldn't, like A Winnie-The-Pooh Thanksgiving (Winnie-The-Pooh of course, originated and is set in England). And don't even get me started on all those Flintstones Christmas specials.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this.
