Hmmm, it tends not to bother me but maybe it bothers you for the same reason it bothers people when writers make a gay character straight? There are already a lot of men/straight characters. To make a woman/gay person the other is to lessen an already small pool of representation.

As long as you keep it to yourself and don't bother the artists about it I don't see a problem with you being bothered by it.

It bothers me because there tends to be so many male characters already that it hints the side of lady removal.

I wouldn't mind if it was, say a full genderswitch of all characters...but when it comes to one female character as a boy I get :/ ...especially if they're the protag. I'll backspace that :C and maybe feel resentful.

Yeah, this is spot on for me.

This. OT but I also get upset when an otherwise awesome female character has her looks mentioned, whether she is plain or pretty, because I am just so sick of that kind of scrutiny. It just feels like a dig at women either way: competent women are too often "softened" with good looks (but it's a ~compliment! women can have it all!), and plain-janes get caught up in adventure because fate has to throw them a bone to even things out. Ughhhhhhh.

I don't like gender swapping for either. Happily for me, there is lots of non swapping out there.

but I agree with the above comment, about erasing the presence of women.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
I hate it when they swap the guys, too. Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
I love it. There's so many guys in media.

I'm not a fan of gender swapping in general, only because I love the characters the way they are. But yeah, there are already more men than women characters so I can understand the frustration.

+1

this. i just don't see the point, unless there's some reason that things would have been markedly different in canon if the character had been the opposite sex. for example, one of my favorite characters is male royalty who is next in line for the throne, and that serves as a basis for a lot of the conflict in his canon. i think a fic where he had been a woman instead could be very interesting because it would have a significant impact on the plot.

but genderswapping just for the sake of genderswapping or in a case where it wouldn't change all that much? i just don't get the appeal.

Secret 11 - Genderswapping in fanfiction, The Hunger Games

[Picture is black text over a blank white background.]

It bothers me so much when people genderswap female characters. I have no issue when people genderswap male characters. It irks me so much! I don't even really know why. (This is mostly because some people on Tumblr are genderswapping Annie from The Hunger Games, ugh.)

I don't like any genderswaps because if I'm looking for fic, it's because I love the characters as they are, and I feel like authors are cheating and writing original characters and slapping fandom names on them. It's silly, there's no such thing as "cheating" at fanfic.

Once, in the time of geocities, I came across a fic that had genderswapped sailor senshi as gundam pilots.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oddly enough, also in the time of Geocities, I saw someone's fanart of their Sailor Moon OCs -- which were gender- (and palette-)swapped Gundam Wing pilots.

(They had MS Painted over video game portraits of the characters, which honestly didn't look too bad at the time, but jarring once the connection was made.)

... of all the characters, I never figured Annie would be the popular one to genderswap.

Especially when it would be pretty easy to imagine that Finnick has had sex with tons of Capitol guys. But maybe that's not why they're doing it. Weird.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this was the part that confused me too.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
maybe it's so finnick's ~one true love will be a dude

I thought it was implied that he definitely had at least a few male lovers in the Capital. I've only just started on the books, so maybe I'm wrong, but I remember noticing how the author avoided gender pronouns in that little part.

I love genderswaps

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
My main interest in fanfic is seeing how characters adapt to situations. I like seeing them beaten, broken, taken apart, and watch them piece themselves back together. Toward that end, genderswap is high on my list.

It fascinates me to watch as the character is forced to respond accordingly to this completely unforeseen event. For all that we strive for equality, and gender-blindness, there is still a distinct difference between the male experience and the female experience. Seeing how particular characters react and adapt to the change, the expectations of their new role, the frustration and disappointment at having to change, the adaptation, the acceptance if permanent or the secondary adaptation when the proper sex is restored... It's not about "this female/male character would work better as a male/female", but "what would happen if this wrench got thrown into his/her life?"

I don't think it's any more offensive than any of the other things we do to characters for the sake of a story.

For me it depends on whether or not there was any point in doing it. If it would change nothing/is purely done to create a slash ship/removal a romantic rival to a het ship then... ugh, no, I don't care for it.

But I've said it before here and a lot of other people like the idea: do it when it would matter, like swapping all three of Sasuke, Naruto, and Sakura. Given how Kishimoto handles gender and how it is represented in his world, if you changed absolutely nothing else, this would make for an intriguing story.

To me that works both ways. If a female character would be more interesting as a man (based on the way the story/setting works) then go for it. Same in reverse.

See, I'm the opposite - it irks me a lot more when male characters get genderswapped. But that's probably because I've seen too many fanarts that genderswap guys for no other reason than to make them into ~hot girls and weirdly objectify them. :\

i love genderswaps that turn dudes into ladies because 90% of the time it = more lesbians and everything needs more lesbians tbh

I like rule!83 a lot, but there are certain characters I can't STAND as being genderswapped.

Currently? It's Rarity from MLP and Elsa from Frozen.

Male!Elsa REALLY bothers me for two reasons: her boyself is boring as shit and I want her stay female and the other is that I've seen people using Jack Frost as her boyself and it IRKS me to no end. Then again, I really really hate Jack Frost. And I wouldn't, normally, if the damn RotG fandom hadn't blown him out of fucking proportion.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I usually don't like it, but in the case of Annie, I don't really think that's such a bad idea. The overwhelming straightness of The Hunger Games can be grating, and I can't really think of any other character/pairing it works for.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-13 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Annie!? I would have thought it would be Katniss - lots of her haters complained that "ugh, she acts like a dude!".

Genderswaps bother me in general, because mostly they seem to be the cover for misogyny and homophobia. I understand pure kinky art/fics, speculative art/fics (as if - what would a character/cast look like...) but I only ever see the "ewww lesbians/gays! needs more hetero and gender stereotypes!".
