Is there a random and superfluous thing that's pure meaingless self-indulgence in your fandom but you love doing it anyway?

Just recently someone posted an image of a random hot background character in Attack On Titan and asked that people give him a name and backstory. So I did, and now I'm hunting through random screenshots to find characters that I can do the same with. It's pretty damn stupid, since they're probably either gonna die or never show up again, but I love doing it, because I love character creation and it's like a mini writing exercise for me.

Those silly, over detailed pokemon headcanons. Like how missing is created from glitched pokeballs with pokemon inside...or that the pokemon items you find in a ball are from a pokemon that died in the ball while holding an item. I think they're fun.

Oh me too, I love those! Pokemon is the only fandom where I'm more invested in the world than the characters, figuring out how it all works is something I love doing. I like assigning Pokemon to characters in other fandoms too! It's so silly, but my headcanons get so long and elaborate, it's so much fun.

I keep meaning to draw other fandoms and the pokemon I'd assign but I'm ~lazy~. But I think about it quite frequently, who'd have what common. Which I should probably share in the smaller fandoms, might get a discussion going!

I love bitching about minute changes in the art of a superhero's costume, home base, workplace, etc. It's pointless but weirdly fun. Also, the hopeless campaign to figure out the geography of DCU!Earth.

Also, making family trees and/or webs of relationships in certain fandoms that have loads and loads of characters. I don't know why, but it just gives me thrills all over.

I <3 relationship trees. They make everything look so integral and definitive.

A few months ago there was an anime classroom chart that showed what type of character usually sits where (like the main character sitting toward the back left by the window so they can stare out it). Now I look for the patterns in every anime I watch and screencap them. I also screencap breaks in the pattern.

What is it with anime and staring out of windows during class, anyway?

I'm surprised that only anime has it, actually, considering that being bored out of your mind in class is probably an universal constant amongst all humanity.

Sure, but they get so much out of such a simple thing - it seems to care so much significance in anime, aesthetic and, really, moral.

Apparently it's so the animators can focus on the protag and don't have to animate the rest of the classroom full of students.

AUs. I have written literally a thousand AUs in my current fandom for my current ship and I've started crossing them over and it's so much fun.

I'm having this exact same problem. Normally I frown on random AUs, but AOT is so fucking grim that I desperately want to put the cast in happier universes. I've got, like, goddamn FIVE rolling around in my head right now.

Damnit, I love fandom memes sometimes. I'm probably exactly the kind of person you hate in your FANDOM RAGE post.

Yes, I love giving background characters names and stories. It's the same kind of weird comfort as looking for small details in the Holmesiana (and then deducing from a single mention of Ballarat that Watson's granddad was a convict sent to Australia).

i don't even play pokemon and I fucking love his thousand-mile stare and then when i read about how he's trying not to fucking destroy everybody in a ten-mile radius i loved it even more

I love logistics. I love making maps and family trees. I love making up family relationships in crossovers and making complicated family trees and timelines and stuff. I love going over the real canons of complicated worlds and outlining stuff to see what happens when. It's amazing all the little details that pop up.

I love the My Little Pony fandom's obsession with naming every single background character.
