God, I used to feel smug about this when I was a kid. I had read LOTR (and found it boring as dirt) and felt super special and smug that I read *real* fantasy and everyone else just liked Harry Potter (I fucking loved Harry Potter, but that didn't stop me from having my cake and eating it too). So I insisted (to myself, quietly) that Harry Potter was a total RIP OFFFF of LotR because of Gandalf and also because the Tolkien Dictionary had the word 'dumbledore' in it, I think. Or something totally similar.
