Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if Luna were the older sister. It saddens me that it probably wouldn't change anything.

I don't really think it would have changed much in the grand scheme of things. Luna's problem wasn't that she was the younger sister - her problem was that she was the scary sister. The sister who did a really important job (controlling the moon and stars, and fighting a lot of monsters according to the comics), but a job that nopony paid any attention to. Being the elder sister might even have made it worse, in that she would feel more entitled to adoration from her little ponies, but still wouldn't have gotten it.

As others have said, though, Celestia being the younger sister would have made her banishment of Nightmare Moon even harder, both practically and emotionally. Celestia is the older and wiser one in canon, and she was crying when she banished her - if she were the younger one, it would have wrecked her even more.

Not even sure what this secret is meant to be... unless your wondering about story changes. I suppose we'd have a Celestia slightly less sure of herself. One who had to take the roll instead of always being born into it. An ascended godqueen instead of an eternal one. (Though still now and forevermore our rightful ruler)

This makes me wonder what it would have been like if the roles were reversed - if Celestia were the one who was jealous and became evil and Luna had to salvage it all...

There's a shared universe for that, the Lunaverse. I'm not fond of it--there's too much character assassination on the Mane 6 to prop up the characters who replace them.

I really must disagree that the Lunaverse uses character assassination. The characters are different, by virtue of it being an alternate universe where some characters turned out differently, from Celestia and Luna down to Twilight Sparkle and her friends. The point of an AU (at least some of them) is to explore different ways of developing a character.

If anything, adding obvious flaws to a character in an AU setting, or stripping virtues from them, is a way of praising the character, because it highlights those virtues or lack of flaws in their canon personalities. For example, Lunaverse!Fluttershy is a doormat with no ability to stand up for herself or anypony else... which highlights just how important canon!Fluttershy's ability to put her hoof down really is.

I rather like Lunaverse actually. It doesn't make them randomly flawed, you can see where attributes they always had have been magnified to an unfortunate degree, but ultimately they aren't cruel or horrible, just harder to deal with.

It's pretty badass, and I want it as a wallpaper.

Also, I like the concept of Luna being older. It would make Celestia's banishing her to the Moon a little more of a feat, even if she did use EOH hax.
It would also be interesting to see their relationship dynamic after Luna came back.
