Favorite Sherlock Holmes story

Uh. What it says. I've noticed there's quite a few Holmes fans here, which makes me happy, so I thought I'd give it a shot :)

The Adventure of the Abbey Grange. It has everything - classic opening ("The game's afoot"), interesting mystery, and one of my favorite resolutions in all of the canon, with Watson singlehandedly representing a British jury.

(Golden Pince-Nez has the best, most atmospheric opening, but the actual story is not nearly good enough; Charles Augustus Milverton is fantastic but not atmospheric or mysterious enough to be a favorite. In case it's not obvious from this selection, The Return is by far my favorite collection).

Er. C.A.M. is definitely a favorite. It's just not the favorite.

(And I love a ton more stories as well, those are just the ones that came to mind as having particularly awesome elements to them.

The Speckled Band. Mostly because it's the first Holmes story I was introduced too and because Holmes taking seriously a story a lot of people at the time would have laughed off as an hysterical female being hysterical.

I love The Speckled Band because of its gothic atmosphere.

The Norwood Builder - cutting edge technology, fingerprints!

Also, Sherlock vs Jellyfish because lol.

My first story also. It was part of my eighth grade lit book. I was happy to read it because I was already familiar with the characters.

Of, there's so many.

The Dancing Men. I don't have anything in particular, it just stuck with me.

The Copper Beeches. If I'm going to ship Holmes with a woman, it's Violet Hunter. It's a fairly good story, as well.

Blah I can't choose. There are too many different criteria by which to judge Sherlock Holmes stories that I can't say any is my favorite. I like different ones for wildly different reasons.

I'm going to say a toss-up between The Speckled Band, The Blue Carbuncle, and Charles Augustus Milverton simply because they were the first Holmes stories I ever read (and are still among my many favorites).

ETA: wait, does The Final Problem count? Because yeah.

The Case of the All Consuming Fire (now that is how to do WhoLock stories, with Holmesian speculation on giant luminous chickens!).

wait I have to choose???? [major shutdown]

My top 5 is as follows: The Copper Beeches, The Dancing Men, The Speckled Band, The Red-Headed League, and The Hound. Although sometimes I exclude The Hound for the sake of being contrary to the popular opinion (it really, really upsets me that half of all the adaptations are based on the Hound, whilst The Dancing Men got, like, two, one of which was the Granada version) and include The Veiled Lodger instead.

Boy, do I love DANC. This story was what made me fall in love with cryptography. Though I was a kid, I immediately realized how simple the cipher was, but instead of thinking something along the lines of "well, Doyle is incapable of inventing complex ciphers" I was all like "Oh MY GOD I can do this, too!!11 It is SO COOL!". The idea of substitution ciphers was novel to me; besides, I was smitten with how logical Holmes's explanation was and how badass he sounded when explaining the thing to Watson. And I think I must have realized even then that Doyle could not introduce anything more complicated - he had to give the reader an opportunity to follow the reasoning. Thank you for this, Sir Arthur <3 My seven-year-old self appreciates your efforts <3

And COPP? A smart, brave female protagonist; a colour play; an awesome mystery; Holmes making deductions in regards to the Rucastle family on the basis of the character of their child. Everything in COPP is pure win.

The Blue Carbuncle.
