Right now I'm slightly annoyed with fics that depict first-time penetrative sex as overwhelming painful like it's a given. It's not usually, if you are aroused and/or prepared well enough.

Or like, 'it was only moderately painful' as evidence that this was amazing, earth shaking sex.

I also get kind of angry about any fic that has the hymen an inch or two inside the vagina.

*coughs* Where is it then?

And how does that come up in fic? I've never seen its location described while it was being penetrated.

The hymen's around the vaginal opening, not inside the vagina.

And it usually comes up by going like "X pushed inside of Y and it was great until X reached a barrier" or something like that. It doesn't specifically say "oh the hymen's in the vagina!" but there's definitely talk about having to break the barrier inside when it's actually more on the outside.

No problem! The main reason it bugs me a lot is because this messed me up when I was younger.

The really sad part is that that's a really common misconception, even among people who really ought to know better. Like the instructor I had for the "Understanding Relationships" class I took at my university (most useless class ever, but it fulfilled a requirement and it was an easy A). We were talking about virginity that day and I said that it's not unusual for a hymen to be broken by sports like horseback riding. The instructor rolled her eyes and said that the hymen is too deep inside the vagina for that to happen. Later in the semester she assured us that you can judge individuals by statistics and said I was an anomaly because I don't want kids.

I'd like to imagine your icon in response to that professor.

To be fair, a lot of people aren't aroused or prepared enough their first time, and so it becomes painful. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy - you expect your first time to be painful, you get so nervous you aren't relaxed or wet/lubed enough, and thus it becomes painful.

I agree that it really isn't a given, but I can see why so many people would think it is.

That and tablespoons (or more!) of blood. If it's streaming out like a head wound, you have a clotting disorder.
