Wow, when I watched this show a few years ago (only a handful of episodes), it seemed like a pretty harmless, cheesy show. What happened?! Every time I hear about it, it seems to get more and more fucked-up and terrible :/

The first episode had a girl getting a teacher fired for inappropriately touching another student, what show were you watching?

that's... good though? inappropriately touching a student SHOULD get you fired. in season 1 Glee, it did. in Glee NOW? it's ignored. Will is creepy around his students all the damn time and the only character to SORT of mention that it's inappropriate is Sue (used to be the over-the-top villain, now the only voice of reason left... while also randomly being over-the-top in wildly offensive ways)

It also treated the situation humorously.

And Will has been like that from the start, I don't think he's acted any worse than he did in the earlier seasons.

I don't remember it being treated as "humorous". It wasn't treated as heavily as it should have been, it WAS indeed far too flippant, but it wasn't supposed to be FUNNY. It was made to be all about how ambitious Rachel is (she only got him fired because he wouldn't acknowledge her enough, rather than her actually caring that he was being inappropriate)

Will's always been a bit creepy, but it HAS gotten worse. In season 1 and some of 2 he at least TRIED to set some boundaries and not be too physical or anything. Then he decided, nope, fuck that, now his students are his BFFs and he should treat them like equals, including dancing and singing with them in overly sexual ways. Yeah. It's gotten worse, and it's called out less.

But then it was making it clear that the situation was pretty fucked up. Later they make casual jokes of sexual assault.

Okay, one thing, I clearly said I watched it years ago and I could count how many times I watched it on my fingers. I can't remember episode details. This is purely based on what I remember my impressions being.

Secondly, from what I've HEARD (I do not watch the show), sexual assault is treated as a joke and various other problematic things happen without acknowledgement from the writers. A teacher being fired for touching a student is showing awareness that sexual assault is bad.

And given that the episodes I watched had a good mix of serious storylines and humour, I don't think a story like that necessarily negates the fact that it seemed like a fun show that didn't take itself too seriously.

She actually got the teacher fired because he didn't give her a role she wanted, she just used him touching the student as an excuse. It was basically dark humor.
