What are some happy things you have watched/read recently?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-12-14 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
My depression has gotten a bit worse the past couple of days and I am trying to find some stuff to watch/read/listen to so that I don't focus on hit.

Sooooo, rec some happy stuff you have enjoyed recently! Let's bring some good cheer into F!S.

My contribution has to be the Youtube!Rewind (http://youtu.be/H7jtC8vjXw8) and Filmography 2013 (http://youtu.be/Y0cstJdV16Q).

I've had a crappy/depressed week myself, and last night I cheered myself up by rewatching Warm Bodies, which has fast become one of my favorite pick-me-up movies.

I think I have that downloaded! I shall watch tonight while I make gifs. :3

And yeah, today was particularly bad and I have no idea why! I was on the verge of crying most of the day for no reason. : /

Netflix has a bunch of episodes of Animal Planet's 'Too Cute' which is apparently a sort of 'best of cute animal videos'.

I've recently started reading Arrows of the Queen by Mercedes Lackey and it's very happy! The protagonist, Talia, starts off in a bad place but it gets happier pretty quickly.

I also got Pride & Prejudice on blu-ray recently so I've watched that and that's my 'I feel like shit I want something pleasant' movie.

How happy is happy? My Lovely Ghost Kana is about how people move on from bad experiences. It starts sad, but it goes in a very optimistic direction, so it could be a good cleanser for your emotions. (Just be warned that there's a lot of sex, albeit cutesy vanilla sex.)

Kids in the Hall has kept me in good spirits for the last week. It's on Netflix USA. Warning: dark, super-edgy humor and heavy use of early 90's gay stereotypes (but, overall, the creators seem to be not homophobic.)

Brawl in the Family is always really cute. It's a Nintendo gaming comic, specifically featuring characters in the Smash Bros series. I linked to the first comic. It starts out slow, but I've been reading it for three years, now.

I love troll secrets. My favorite is Sherlock.

These Jim Henson-inspired cakes.

I've been rereading Lois McMaster Bujold's "Paladin of Souls" the last couple days for precisely this reason - it always cheers me up. Such a good book.

I just re-watched the 1974 Murder on the Orient Express with Albert Finney. I adore that movie so freaking much. I'm not sure it quite qualifies as happy, but it made ME happy, and the whole concept of the solution to the mystery is something that charmed the pants off me when I was younger.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNrvDdvINgU - Avez-Vous déjà-vu, A friend showed them to me, they're french and a little bizarre but after a few I started finding them kind of funny (I can't understand much french, but some of these are pretty easy to get nonetheless)

Y-titty, parody of 'wrecking ball' by miley cirus (german this time), they generally seem to do a lot of music video parodies (though it is kind of hard to understand without german and having seen the original, doesn't youtube have those generated subtitles?)

Tekkonkinkreet - an anime movie. I quite liked the style, it's a bit surreal and at times depressing, but the ending alone is worth it. It's about two brothers who live on the street, called black and white. They are getting along quite fine, but then the yakuza come into that part of the city and everything changes (Mature for (graphic) violence, preetty good though)

Also, Eddie Izard, some of his older stuff is on youtube in full and I was quite enchanted with some of his stuff, so maybe look that up.

If you like Terry Pratchett/Neil Gaiman and haven't yet read Good Omens, I would also recommend it, alone for it's sheer positiviness.

Hope some of that sounds interesting to you and that you'll feel better soon!

Whenever I'm depressed I try to read some Calvin & Hobbes. or watch one of my favorite comedies like Dodgeball or Holy Grail.

There was one time when I was having one of my bad days - the really bad kind, where you've given up on trying to feel better and are instead actively trying to make it worse out of sheer masochism - and went on TV Tropes to try and find something that I could hate myself for watching. I was browsing around, and the title "Hatoful Boyfriend" happened to catch my eye. "I've never even heard of that," I thought, and clicked the link.

"..." I thought.

"..."

"..."

"...a dating sim about pigeons?"

I cracked up, and I don't think I stopped smiling for days once I started playing. That game is some seriously awesome crack. Special kudos to Angie's Let's Play (http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?67529-Hatoful-Boyfriend-A-dating-game-about-pigeons), which makes the most of the absurdity.

I started the Miiverse thing on my 3DS. I drew stupid pictures about my character in the pokemon games needing an umbrella and people liked it. That was fun.

As for watching something. I always find this funny when I need a pick-me-up: Glitching Mass Effect

I finally got around to watching the David Tennant/Catherine Tate production of Much Ado About Nothing, and it was fantastic and hilarious and I adored it. Highly recommend.

I've been reading Northanger Abbey and so far it hasn't failed to bring a smile to my face. If only it weren't so short--I'll be sad when I'm done!

Oh, and my feel-good winter books--all of the Betsy-Tacy series, and The Secret Garden for when winter is a little farther advanced.

(And now I'm wondering whether there is Betsy-Tacy fanfic anywhere...)

The Voice Kids (Korea) had this little contestant named ChoEun Kim and she was ADORABLE. You don't have to understand the language to enjoy her having a huge blast singing away, and she's pretty good too! I just want to wrap her up and carry her away in my pocket.

and on the same show there was this one other performance...a lot of times it seems on kids' competitive shows they over-perform, but these three were so sweet and sincere, I just love them.
