I saw the movie with no book knowledge and immediately assumed he was on her side from his introduction, then spent the rest of the movie second guessing myself. So I agree, this clock thing sounds like a dead give away.

Ah okay it's been a week but I'll try and remember? I think because he seemed to have success and fame already. Being the game designer didn't seem too attractive, so his whole "oh I'm coming out of retirement especially for these games" made his focus on her notable. He's not a politician, why was figuring out ways to kill this particular set of people exciting enough to risk his own comfortable life? The political side was special, not the game design.
Then I started to wonder if maybe he was just twisted enough that he enjoyed the challenge... but initially he seemed more mysterious than sadistic!
