I don't think it was cut because it would confuse people. The director said it was cut because it made it too obvious to the audience that Plutarch was on Katniss's side.

Given that I wanted to reach into the book and slap Katniss for not picking up on it, this was probably a wise choice.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
haha, yeah. I could SEMI-understand if she'd just spotted it or something and assumed it was a fashion statement. But he went out of his way to show her something with something she knows has become a symbol of rebellion. *facepalm*

I didn't enjoy the books because I hated Katniss, but the more I think on it I think I hated her less as a character and more because she was a terrible narrator. A character misses the significance of something? Fine. The first-person narrator points something out to the audience and misses its significance at the same time? Congratulations, you have made your character stupid.

Wow, managed to both double-post and mistype. Impressive.

I totally understand that. Occasionally, Suzanne Collins relies on Katniss being super dense in order to make the plot work*. It's not good writing. I mean, Katniss is characterised as being pretty unobservant of people, but it's ridiculous at times.

*I don't actually understand why Katniss couldn't realise the significance in this case without it spoiling the plot in this case? Like, couldn't she assume that he was trying to tell her he liked her and was on her side? And then when the Quarter Quell announcement happened, she could have 'taken it back' that she thought he was on her side? Like, 'how could I possibly have thought he was on my side when he was planning on sending me into the arena the whole time?' Instead of going 'lol the Head Gamemaker has a Mockingjay watch, probably just a fashion statement. Lol Capitol.'

OP

It can be rather thinly argued that she's by nature very suspicious and unwilling to countenance the real likelihood that anyone but Cinna could be willing to be more than just a superficial Capitol flunky.

Especially given that she associates Gamemakers with the Games, and she was betrayed to her core at the realization that Snow intended to break the one guarantee she thought she had: Victors never get reaped for the Games.

Still, she's also perceptive, so making her a peculiar kind of dense in that scene in retrospect felt rather clumsily structured.

This. It was so incredibly obvious from the start it was just painful the way it completely flew over her head.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
lmao I had the same reaction

Oh god, Katniss was such a failure at spying 101 in that scene. I was all but on the edge of my seat wondering if Plutarch might be more than he seemed in some way. Gaaah. :|

I was disappointed Plutarch didn't flash the watch at all ... I spent a good part of the movie wondering if I had misread the book or worried they were changing the character into something more in the movie.

I saw the movie with no book knowledge and immediately assumed he was on her side from his introduction, then spent the rest of the movie second guessing myself. So I agree, this clock thing sounds like a dead give away.

I had book knowledge but had completely forgotten and did the same thing :)

Out of curiosity, what made you initially decide he was on her side? :)

Ah okay it's been a week but I'll try and remember? I think because he seemed to have success and fame already. Being the game designer didn't seem too attractive, so his whole "oh I'm coming out of retirement especially for these games" made his focus on her notable. He's not a politician, why was figuring out ways to kill this particular set of people exciting enough to risk his own comfortable life? The political side was special, not the game design.
Then I started to wonder if maybe he was just twisted enough that he enjoyed the challenge... but initially he seemed more mysterious than sadistic!
Edited (reading the other comments jogged my memory of the scene :)) 2013-12-14 03:22 (UTC)

I actually like that explanation a fair bit, especially since the movie was able to show more of Plutarch's actions than the book. At very least, it's nice to know there was a valid reason for it.
