Re: Little fandom opinions that are too minor or uncontroversial to submit as secrets

I really dislike how MCU fics keep being written like they're in the comic settings, even though the characters are nothing like the comics and the authors usually read few or none of them.

i.e. the superheroes all living together and fighting massive disasters in New York on a regular basis, Thor and the Asgardians being gods instead of ancient aliens, innocent and patriotic Steve, etc.

The things I liked most about the movies was the way they shifted away from some of the broader and abstract/universe-specific/Marvel-centric aspects and brought it into the "real world", i.e. Asgardians being ancient aliens instead of gods, not too many superheroes, disasters being spread across multiple areas instead of just New York and being Big Deals instead of some kind of regular occurrence, more military involvement, etc. And don't get me started on naive and innocent Steve. -_- Did these people watch the same movie I did? Where do they get the impression Steve is a True Patriot who trusts and believes in his government and never swears? WHERE?!

I agree with most of this comment, though I think the bit about them all living together in NY might for some at least just be headcanon, and it's one that I really like.

I think it comes part from wish-fulfillment and part from laziness.

Having them all living together and fighting regular disasters is an easy setting to work with - it neatly avoids having to think too hard about timelines and having to think of how to bring the whole team together again, for example.

And the team wasn't really very close in the movie, so, wish-fulfillment by them living together and getting to become friends!

Innocent!Steve is easier to write than the actual movie!Steve, less pesky complexities and gray areas.

Asgardians being Gods opens up room to play with the myths, but I suspect it's more about superpowering and elevating Thor and the others in the character/power tiers and simplifying their characterization.

And keeping everything contained in New York and avoiding military aid means less characters to juggle, so. vov

I know why these keep getting written, but that doesn't stop me from being irritated by them. -_-

Tony was actually designing Avengers tower at the end of Avengers, so the "living together" bit has some basis. Plus, it's an ensemble fandom, and people need an excuse to have them interact. Pretty obvious.

In all honesty, it's not even the living together aspect itself that bugs me, it's all the tropes that keep getting attached to it.

I hate naive and blindly patriotic Steve. The guy has had more heart and down-to-earth common sense than most people around him in every movie he's been in. When confronted with new things, he learns, he doesn't boggle or judge. Christ.

I wonder how these people forgot that a lot of Steve's defining scenes were him disobeying orders from his superiors/sneaking around behind their backs to get shit done. And I get why people might on the surface assume that someone like Steve would be superpatriotic, given the uniform, but isn't the whole point of the movie going beyond the surface? Part of his team isn't even American, neither is the woman he fell in love with, and his first father-figure in the movie is a German. I thought it was pretty much the point that Steve wasn't fighting for the sake of patriotism, but for the sake of what's right, and the overblown patriotism was just a side-effect/necessary evil to fight the good fight in the first place.

Apparently, they never get past the flag uniform to notice any of that important plot stuff and critical character development. And okay, Chris Evans is very distracting, but still. The guy would not be a hero today if he obediently followed the status quo - no one would.
