You know, I keep hearing about coffee shop AUs, but I've never actually read one. They kind of confuse me actually.

Like why coffee? Is more about the 'coffee' or the 'shop'? Is there something unique about the two put together that justify it as a major AU genre? Is it supposed to be the dude version of a maid cafe? Is there any plot or drama to be had from such a specific set-up other than COFFEE? Like, I just don't get it.

As someone who loved coffeeshop AUs and can't read enough of them, I'll try to explain the appeal - at least to me.

To anyone who loves coffee, hot chocolate, tea, etc., a coffee shop can be your home away from home. You can take a book or your laptop and sit for hours. Mom and Pop ones are best because they're usually homey and inviting, with fun decor and overstuffed furniture. They're also cheaper than Starbucks. You can become a regular and the baristas know you so it's like getting to hang out with friends. When I worked in a coffee shop, we were like a family and had regular customers that were like friends.

So put that together with your favorite characters and it can be a fun AU. They're obviously not for everyone, but this is why I love them.

Coffee shop AUs exist because most fanfiction is written by young people, and a lot of young people have been in or worked in a coffee shop. They're what high school AUs grow up to be, basically, and unlike most other realistic AU types, they don't require much research.

I actually really like coffee shop AUs, but part of their existence is due to them being really easy to write and understand. That's just true.

Personally I'd say it's because the author wants a reason for a bunch of young adults to be together but don't want the trashiness of a fast food place or the like. Coffee shops are more ~dignified~
