I don't get the appeal of coffee-shop AUs, and would actually prefer coffee-shop-that's-actually-a-speakeasy-during-prohibition-era-America AUs

I have an action figure of James T. Kirk that my sister gave me. Being a ship's captain, he's licensed to marry people. Does that count?

I'd be fine with this, but mostly because I'd just like more fic about drinking. Or at least more realistic fic about drinking.

That would be AWESOME. That said, I wouldn't want the people who write the coffee shop AUs to write those--too much research involved, and just judging based on the way some fans write certain characters (Steve Rogers from the Avengers, for example) very few people can handle that research.

...I may or may not be writing one, right now, though the coffee shop itself isn't the speakeasy - it's just the cover/entrance for the speakeasy, which is quite literally underground. Even in a Prohibition AU, Tony Stark doesn't do things half-assed.

It was original for the Cap/IM Reverse Bang, but I had to drop out due to time constraints. That said, lately I've been rather lax in my fanfic writing, and as a way to get back into writing, I'm going to start posting smaller pieces or floating scenes on Tumblr before I post the finished pieces on AO3 and DW/LJ.

If you want, I can PM you when I start posting it (either on in pieces on Tumblr or completed/in chapters on AO3/DW/LJ). :)

You know, I keep hearing about coffee shop AUs, but I've never actually read one. They kind of confuse me actually.

Like why coffee? Is more about the 'coffee' or the 'shop'? Is there something unique about the two put together that justify it as a major AU genre? Is it supposed to be the dude version of a maid cafe? Is there any plot or drama to be had from such a specific set-up other than COFFEE? Like, I just don't get it.

As someone who loved coffeeshop AUs and can't read enough of them, I'll try to explain the appeal - at least to me.

To anyone who loves coffee, hot chocolate, tea, etc., a coffee shop can be your home away from home. You can take a book or your laptop and sit for hours. Mom and Pop ones are best because they're usually homey and inviting, with fun decor and overstuffed furniture. They're also cheaper than Starbucks. You can become a regular and the baristas know you so it's like getting to hang out with friends. When I worked in a coffee shop, we were like a family and had regular customers that were like friends.

So put that together with your favorite characters and it can be a fun AU. They're obviously not for everyone, but this is why I love them.

Coffee shop AUs exist because most fanfiction is written by young people, and a lot of young people have been in or worked in a coffee shop. They're what high school AUs grow up to be, basically, and unlike most other realistic AU types, they don't require much research.

I actually really like coffee shop AUs, but part of their existence is due to them being really easy to write and understand. That's just true.

Personally I'd say it's because the author wants a reason for a bunch of young adults to be together but don't want the trashiness of a fast food place or the like. Coffee shops are more ~dignified~

I don't get the appeal of 'real world' coffee shop AUs, but there IS a Dishonored coffee shop AU that I've been enjoying. Of course, it's less "coffee shop AU" and more "The story of Dishonored if Dunwall was a modern-day theater district rather than a whale-punk fantasy island."

Hahaha, I have an Attack On Titan AU that based off the exact same concept.

I don't mind AUs - especially if the source material is so goddamn grim - but the sheer amount of coffee shop/college/high school AUs kinda annoy me. They're so BORING. You can find those AUs in any goddamn fandom. Can't they do those things but give them the unique features of what made the source so interesting?

Oh, and also, if you like coffee-shops-that's-actually-a-speakeasy-during-prohibition-era-America, then you might want to check out the webcomic Lackidaisy Cats. That's basically its whole premise. Oh, and they're cat people.
