This topic happened yesterday and I missed it, so I'm reviving it. Cool? Cool.

Has anything said on this community ever impacted our real life e.g changing an opinion, changing a course of action, or doing something you would not have done otherwise?

I come here almost everyday instead of doing something else.

I think that counts for something.

Discussions here have definitely effected my opinions on topics and shows. But other than watching new shows or reading books suggested here I don't think I've ever done anything I wouldn't have otherwise.

So, some time ago I had contributed to this community in what I thought was a particularly harmless way. A certain named member of this community (who shall remain nameless) seemed to disagree. quite vehemently. they were so convinces that my opinion was WRONG and I was living my life in a wrong way, and that I needed to be TOLD because I was so stupid not to see things their way, and it just went on and on and on. This did not impact positively on my real life. It had been some years since my last... act of a certain type of stupidity and I was so sure I could handle this type of thing. I mean, difficult aggressive discussions or strong willed personalities had never been one of the things that pushed me in that way before so I really wouldn't have thought it would have been a big deal. I was very very wrong.

I'm pretty certain the issue was my own. they didn't make me do what I did, my own fucked up brain that reacts so badly to certain types of input did, so I'm not blaming anyone, but yeah, at the same time nobody seems to care about the things they say and how they really can affect someone of a particular frame of mind.

I dunno, I'm sure the first comment is going to be something along the lines of "Fandom Secrets is a loving place full of lovely people and if you can't handle that you shouldn't be allowed on the internet". Don't know why I wanted to share this story so much.

*hugs if wanted* I'm sorry this happened to you. I can think of a couple of incidents like that in recent memory, and it always catches me so off-guard when I see it. Some of the people here can be real assholes. I hope you're doing better now.

I'm sorry that happened. People here have said hurtful things to me, but nothing on that scale. :/ Keep in mind a lot of people who do that are just trying to feel tougher than they really are. It REALLY doesn't make it okay, but don't doubt yourself because of some idiots who have nothing better to do.

Something very similar has happened to me a couple of times here. I'm sorry to hear that it happened to you as well.

I tried calling someone out on it once and was told I was taking things too seriously, was being a baby, couldn't take a joke, didn't understand sarcasm, should walk away from the internet, and on and on.

I really like this place, but it's not perfect. Not by a long shot.

I've had people accuse me of not being able to handle real life because I let myself get angry in a discussion, where they told someone to die. Which seems pretty stupid to me, most people are entirely capable of reacting to things differently based on where they are, who they're talking to, all the usual stuff.

It's not this community alone--blogs like Shakesville and Kate Harding have influenced me too--but fat acceptance movement people, here and elsewhere, have made me more determined than ever to lose weight. Because I've come to associate fatness with people being insufferable on the internet.

Really? I thought f!s as a whole was against the whole fat acceptance movement. Or at least against unhealthy lifestyles.
