I never know why there aren't more bicycles in zombie apocalypses. They go on all types of terrain, you don't run out of gas, as long as zombies are kept to a shuffle the car vs bicycle speed issue isn't really that important...

I think it's partly because the amount of gear you can carry on a bicycle is limited, and there's no protection between you and the zombies -- which may not matter too much if all the zombies are behind you, but if you're trying to break out of an infested area or traverse a road with a few of them scattered along it, you want something between the zombies and your tender flesh. Also, cars can be used as relatively safe shelter for sleeping in, while a bike can't.

Yeah, but - gas goes bad fairly quickly. You could only drive a car around for a year, max, maybe less, on stored gas. After that - you're done.

If you have a diesel vehicle, I think there are ways to run it on vegetable oil.

Yeah, you can, but you might have to modify it a bit...or do something to the veggie oil. I researched this ,but now i can't remember, heh.

I just took a quick glance at Wikipedia (to reassure myself that I wasn't completely talking out my ass about this), and I think you have to heat the oil up a bit first, to lower the viscosity? It didn't seem too impossible for a post-apocalyptic setting.

So long as you can find non-rancid oil in enough quantities, you'd be good to go. I think i'd still go for a bike, though, if the zombies were shambly, slow ones.

They actually address this in one mission of Zombies, Run!, although that's in the context of bikes versus runners rather than bikes versus cars. (Motorized vehicles are for emergencies and mass evacuations only in this 'verse; cars and roads are unreliable in the absence of regular maintenance, fuel is at a premium, and zombies are attracted to loud sounds, like engine noise.) Bikes require an extra layer of miantenance and introduce an extra layer of "things that can go wrong while in the field," and what they give you in speed they take away in maneuverability in tight quarters. Basically, bikes are great if nothing goes wrong, but if something does go wrong they become a liability.
