Re: What would you do if you won the lottery?

[personal profile] ariakas 2013-12-14 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on what kind of lottery it was. If it was your average $1-5 million dollar lottery I'd buy a decent place, give some money to friends/relatives to help them with their mortgages/student loans/debts/etc. (after which I would tell them that I "spent it all" >>), then invest the rest to give myself a decent yearly income boost and retirement fund.

If we're talking $50-100 million plus fuck you type money, then I would buy a huge waterside plot of land or island, put a small but luxurious house on it, and leave the rest as a no public access nature reserve. I would set up a scholarship at my alma mater for students with financial difficulties. I would help family and friends of course, but I'd put a lot more into charities, particularly for (non-PETA) animal protection groups and women's rights in developing countries. Then I'd invest enough in blue chip stocks and mutual funds that I'd never have to work again but could still live on a fairly extravagant income and spend the rest of my life travelling the world, researching any subject I felt like, and writing. I'd buy a plane and get my pilot's license; I'd finally buy (as opposed to having to rent all the time) my own set of top of the line SCUBA gear for both cold and warm water; I'd start sky diving and base jumping; I'd search for relics of historical or scientific value... My dream is to be the modern day version of the independently wealthy, eccentric, scholarly adventurer you last saw crop up in novels earnestly using the term "Empire".
