What would you do if you won the lottery?

[personal profile] tasogare_n_hime 2013-12-14 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I was talking with my parents about it earlier. and they thought what I would do was kinda weird, but very me.

First I'd have a guestroom, with a half-bath added into my house just in case someone actually came to visit me long enough to need a place to sleep. Not counting bathrooms, and the utility room I have two rooms in my house. One up on the ground floor, and the upstairs room. I'd also have one of my bedroom windows replaced by a door, and have a balcony or something put all around the second floor of my house.

What I'd really love to do however is have a living place built for the farm cats we have. Something with good heating in winter, AC in summer. Easy to clean, with protected bedding that has plenty of machine washable covers. A lot of places for the cats to climb/sleep/play/whatever they want to do. Self filling/filtering water bowls, wild animal proof food storage. Storage space for cleaning supplies, a sink with hot and cold water, an emergency veterinary kit, and a small fridge for things that need it. And finally its own generator for when we get power outages. It would be the best thing ever if I could do that.

So what about you guys?

Pay off all my student loans, buy a house for each of my family members somewhere nice and close to each other, and invest the rest.

Buy a house. Not work.

I think about this all the time. I buy a ticket with a $10k prize pretty regularly (there's a second-chance drawing for other prizes on losing tickets, too), and if it were that much, I'd kill most of my credit card debt and boost my savings for a down payment on a house while saving a little back for a trip or some fun things.

If I won anything between $10k and $100k, I'd do the same on a larger scale. Anything more (especially in the millions range), I'd do whatever the hell I wanted.

Get a good apartment+ furnish it nicely, pay my university tuition and then hoard the rest like a fucking dragon. I don't ask for much immediate satisfaction, I'd just be happy knowing I have money to fall back on.

Take some trips, just live off the money for a while.

I was thinking about this, with the lottery so high. So this is assuming the ~400 million type of money.

1. Make sure all the tax stuff was figured out in regards to it. Triple check everything.

2. Pay off any loans my family has. My student loans, anything my parents have unpaid. Put aside money so that my sister can go to whatever college she wants to.

3. Halve the money and set up a charitable fund and start contributing heavily to charities.

4. Buy a house/apartment in London.

5. Travel travel travel. Go on a fancy trip to Japan and stay there for a while.

6. Set up everything so that my family is secure for life. I'd spend my days in between London, Nagoya/Tokyo and the US with a lot of traveling involved. But I would make sure to calculate how much money everything is so that there are a lot of financial cushions involved.

So tl;dr pay off anything for family, charity, set up for life, travel travel travel.

Never work, buy a house.

Pay off my student loans and all my other outstanding bills. Buy a car. Get my dog to the vet. Get myself to the doctors and have ALL THE TESTS done. Get back on medication for my various disorders.

Then, if there's enough, plan out what I would need to feasibly live my life on the road/traveling and see if there's enough to: Pay off my parents mortgage, Give my parents a bunch of money, Help my parents redo their super old farmhouse, Pay off my best friends school loans and pay for the rest of her PhD, hire a lawyer for my brother to help with his custody battle and also set up some sort of payment program to give him and his wife a monthly allowance.

Possibly I would go back to college and finish my degree, but idk if I care about that at this point. All I really want to do is travel around with my dog.

I'd pay the mortgage off completely so the house is well and truly mine, I'd repair the hole in the roof on the front porch and get the A/C replaced since it doesn't cool at all anymore. I'd replace the fridge with one I don't have to restart every couple of hours. I'd fix the back door and put in a window instead. I'd pay off all my and my sisters' student loans. I'd pay off my parents' debts while I'm at it and I'd set my dad up with a retirement fund so he can just chill. I'd set aside enough funds to finish school and then some in the case I could possibly get into grad school (like to get my MFA in English/Creative Writing so I could teach workshops). Then I'd buy every season of Oz and every book on my Amazon wishlist. After all of that shit, maybe I'd buy more icons for my LJ account because, hell, I'd have the money.

I would immediately feel x10000000 times safer. After that, I would just carry on the way I do know, only without the constant nerve-wracking questions like "oh my god what shall I eat the next month if I don't do this shit".

- Pay off my college loans (and pay for my future ones ahead of time, if that's allowed)

- Pay off my car

- Buy a nice house

- Buy a ship

- Be that pet owner who spoils their pet rotten

- Save the rest for if I do decide to go through with going to med school

- Get sewing lessons so that I can actually make the cosplay ideas I have in my head

- Made said ideas

(not necessarily in that order)

Considering I think about this almost every day:

-a car since I don't have my own right now
-pay off all debts, including those of my family and close friends
-my own house, furnished just how I want
-new laptop
-new clothes - I bought a couple shirts in the last month and that is the extent of my new clothes for this year
-donate to all the charities I always want to and can't afford
-travel

1.) Pay for my education
2.) Pay off my parents' debts
3.) Pay for my brother's education
4.) Donate some to various charities and political causes
5.) Set some aside for a rainy day

As for anything else, it would depend on how much I won. If it's only around $1 million or less, I'd invest whatever's left to save up for travelling, one day. If it's from there to about $2-4 million, I'd use it to support myself enough to be able to write and publish some books or something, or use it as a long-term sideline to a regular career, and/or invest some for my parents so they could retire sooner. If it's like $5 million or over, I'd probably splurge a wee bit, then use the rest to start my own political campaign/career in politics. If there is enough extra, I'd give it to my parents so they'd never have to work again. *shrugs*

Buy a house and hoard the rest. Considering buying a house doesn't look like it'll happen in the near future otherwise, it would be really handy.

Also, psst. That cat paradise you're thinking of is a house. Indoor cats, dude, indoor cats.

1) Pay off what's left of my credit cards (not much left, since I haven't used them since 2004, but it'd be nice to get rid of the debt).
2) Get the dead limb cut off the tree in my yard, before it falls on the neighbor's house.
3) Tear down my house. Maybe put another one its place. Maybe not. Maybe just sell the plot of land and let someone else deal with it.
4) Find a house with land. Fence it all in. Start an animal rescue. Find a good dog trainer, and start working with rescue dogs for search and rescue, drug search, police work, etc., and sell them to police stations across the U.S. for tons less than what it costs to get a good dog from Europe.

Pay off student loans, buy myself a nice and smallish house, pay off my folks mortgage, get a dog and put rest in savings?

Buy or rent a studio, a wheel, a couple of kilns, some instructional books and a shitload of clay, and then say "fuck you, university, I'll teach myself". God, what I'd give to quit university!

And then I'd get a houseboat, because they're just cool.

Drop the fuck out of college, buy a little house on west Maui, stick the reat in the bank, and never work for anything ever again.

Depending on the size of the payoff.... Pay off all debts, of course. Set up a trust for the Monstrous Bebe for when she's older. Give money to my family and set up a trust fund for the nieces/nephews for college. I have a short list of friends i love dearly who would each get a couple million.

New glasses and the dentist for all of us! And some upgrades to the house, as i don't want to move until the Bebe graduates. Then....the ocean, the ocean, the ocean, and visiting all the places we've ever wanted to go, and taking my mom to some of them, and my sister to some others, and my bff to still others and THE OCEAN ALL THE TIME, HOUSE ON THE SAND, YES YES YES! :)

Depends on how much. Seven digits and up, pack up the cats and clear the fuck out of town for awhile - get a hotel room in another state or something, maybe with my mom along for advice. It would not be good for me to be sitting on that kind of money where I live if it was announced on the news or some shit. At that amount in a lump sum, I already know I'll be dumping most of the money into animal charities and the local library system, and then locking up the rest in the bank. I do not want millions on hand to be stupid with.

After I know it's safe, though...a house, two cars, all decked out with the latest technology while I spend the rest of my life getting education in leisure instead of necessity. My cats would also be spoiled little shits, with many many more adopted friends, because being a rich crazy cat lady is my idea of bliss.

Depends on what kind of lottery it was. If it was your average $1-5 million dollar lottery I'd buy a decent place, give some money to friends/relatives to help them with their mortgages/student loans/debts/etc. (after which I would tell them that I "spent it all" >>), then invest the rest to give myself a decent yearly income boost and retirement fund.

If we're talking $50-100 million plus fuck you type money, then I would buy a huge waterside plot of land or island, put a small but luxurious house on it, and leave the rest as a no public access nature reserve. I would set up a scholarship at my alma mater for students with financial difficulties. I would help family and friends of course, but I'd put a lot more into charities, particularly for (non-PETA) animal protection groups and women's rights in developing countries. Then I'd invest enough in blue chip stocks and mutual funds that I'd never have to work again but could still live on a fairly extravagant income and spend the rest of my life travelling the world, researching any subject I felt like, and writing. I'd buy a plane and get my pilot's license; I'd finally buy (as opposed to having to rent all the time) my own set of top of the line SCUBA gear for both cold and warm water; I'd start sky diving and base jumping; I'd search for relics of historical or scientific value... My dream is to be the modern day version of the independently wealthy, eccentric, scholarly adventurer you last saw crop up in novels earnestly using the term "Empire".

Buy a house, buy a cat or two, get a passport, go to New Zealand, buy a couple of swords, go to Canada, go to Germany, visit people I know online.

Not necessarily in that order.
