I think it's possible to try and change shit within either context

On the contrary, I don't think it's possible to try to change shit no matter what.

Well, really, if you think about it, it's possible to try to change shit not matter what. You can always try. The real question is whether trying to change shit has even an outside chance of ever being effective. My bad for using imprecise language.

Secret 4 - Ghost in the Shell (anime)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-14 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a screen-capture from the Japanese animated series/franchise? "Ghost in the Shell". It shows television news program broadcasting a man sitting on the floor, while another person, standing behind him, aims a gun at the back of his head. The gunman's face is obscured by a symbol of a smiling face that is kind of wearing a baseball cap? and has the following text around it: "I thought what I'd d[unreadable]s I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes".]

When I was in my teens I idealised The Laughing Man, he was everything I tried and wanted to be as a person working within a corrupt system. But I've come to realise that after nearly a decade I've become Section 9 instead.

From Wikipedia:

"The Laughing Man is an expert hacker, able to hide his physical presence by editing himself out of video feeds and cybernetic eyes, concealing his identity by superimposing an animated logo over his face, and hijacking cybernetic brains altogether, all in real-time."

He apparently assaulted an important political figure on live television and used his mad hacking skills to hide his appearance from everyone ever, making them think that weird logo thing was his actual face, igniting a sort of counterculture in the public.

"Public Security Section 9 was established as a search and rescue organization. Officially billed as an international organization, it is actually a counter-terrorist network and anti-crime unit operating in the Japanese National Public Safety Commission. Its operatives are allowed to act with or without government consent as they are almost unknown to the public eye. In particular, Section 9 and its members are among the best cyber warfare operatives in the country, and as a result usually end up involved in cases relating to the Internet, such as hacking and cyberterrorism."

There are more than one road to Rome. Though your work is more like that of Section 9 than the Laughing Man, do you think what you are doing is productive and are you happy doing it?
