idec if it makes me not a "true fan" i've read the hobbit book a half dozen times and never cared about any of the dwarves, but the movies made me adore them.

I don't think preferring dwarves with personalities over dwarves of the book is the marker of a true fan or not. The dwarves of The Hobbit have no personality in the books (except for Thorin being a pompous git) so the movies are an instant improvement.

Bombur has a personality too. He's fat and unpleasant and fat and kind of lazy and fat and whiny and did we mention he's fat? That's a personality, right?

This is a very good point. The dwarves in the book are totally forgettable and there are waaaay too many of them, since so many get little use other than to make up the numbers for the whole "13 is unlucky!" issue.

The movie makes all of them individual and memorable.
