PSA for car owners

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Our five-year-old Toyota was stolen from our driveway in the middle of the night. It has been 15°F and below after sunset this entire week but I guess criminals gotta do what criminals gotta do.

Everyone, please don't leave any valuables in the car. Take your belongings, your keys, your ownership papers (IDs), anything that cannot be easily replaced with you when you get out. Park in open, easily seen spots instead of spots obstructed by housing or vegetation. Lock doors from within the car and double check doors are fully locked by pulling on the handle after you leave (apparently there are ways to scramble signals made to cars from car lock remotes).

Even if you live in a safe neighborhood, or if you're only going back to the house to grab something quickly, don't let laziness rule you. Don't set yourself up for a easy car-nab job.

To the people who had the gall to steal the car from a family with old people (there were two separate sets of bifocal glasses in the slots below radio) and young children (there are car seats in the back seat) two weeks before Christmas:

I hope karma gives you exactly what you shitheads deserve.

While I agree that car thieves are likely shitheads and yes you shouldn't make their lives easier by making yourself/your car an easy target, I admit that I did laugh a little/raise an eyebrow at your last bit.

Would it have been okay if they'd stolen a car from someone comfortably well off or middle-aged, or someone like me with no kids and no old people?

Stealing is stealing, no matter who they're stealing from. I'd be just as hard up if my car was stolen as anyone else.

It is never okay to steal. We're having a hard time getting the kids where they need to go without a car and I'm frustrated. Sorry if I was saying something different.

DA

The anon above is being ... unkind ... stuff sucks, dude. Hope you and yours get a new car ASAP. (Insurance?)

It takes a month for insurance to pay out. The companies do not want to pay too soon in case the car can be found.

:-( Best wishes for managing until then. Maybe see if you can get a deal at a rental place? They might lend a sympathetic discount when they hear your plight...

You weren't saying anything different. The previous anon just wanted to be a passive-aggressive little shit.

I'm sorry to hear about the theft, OP, it sucks. :(

two weeks before Christmas

I was going to say that is some horrible, horrible luck, but having your car stolen at ANY time is horrible luck. I can see why it might feel even worse near Christmas (when you might be traveling to visit loved ones, or shopping for presents, etc), but yea....I hope the culprit is caught. :(

That is awful. And I agree that its a special kind of extra kick in the teeth so close to Christmas and when kids or the elderly are involved. I hope something wonderful comes into your life to help soften the blow.
