Do you ever leave negative reviews?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-14 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
If there's something that really angered you, or disappointed, or annoyed you have you ever left a negative review on a fic or fanart?

I've left constructive feedback before, but never a negative comment or review.

I was sorely tempted to last night for the first time. I didn't, but I keep thinking about it.

tell us more, anon. What was it? Was it a horrible fic? Or a horrible piece of art? What was horrible? *is nosy*

I mentioned it yesterday in the 'annoying stuff you've read lately thread', it was a fic and...lemme just go copy/paste what I said last night.

I just read what was an excellent rape recovery angst fest up until the final chapter, where the author pulled the "rape was a good thing because all this other stuff ended up happening and maybe we never would have met so I'm happy I was raped yay lets have sex!" It was totally unexpected judging by the rest of the fic and its careful and considerate treatment of the subject. So annoying and frustrating.

Fic and art do not anger me. I don't know if any piece of fiction ever could (now non-fiction is a different thing. Nikolay Lossky, I'm eyeing u, u stupid shit). Disappoint? ...No, this does not happen. Usually, I see right away that it's not my cuppa/not quality work (and my fandoms do not have 100k+ multichapter stuff that could mess the storyline up). Annoyed? Yeah, but these are mostly the fics with pairings I hate (sometimes I read them out of some considerations I cannot myself comprehend. Joanlock, ffs).

So, the only cause for a negative review would be bad writing, and I do not leave any reviews on badly written stuff - I do not think it shall do the author any good. I mean, I know I wrote some godawful things, and I certainly would have been discouraged if anyone ever tore them apart back then. Constructive feedback=good, negative reviews=pointless.

I usually don't, cause if the story/writing just sucks I backspace out and don't waste any more time on it; but there have been some times when I stuck out a badly-written story because there were some aspects I loved, and then I tried to leave a critical review. "I enjoyed your story because I loved xyz; there are a lot of typos/character x seems kinda out of character/I don't think z is accurate to canon, but if those weren't there it would be pretty much perfect!"

Nope. That would involve more effort than I'm willing to expend on something I don't like.

Once on a fic, and the author responded badly.

These days my philosophy is that fanfic is written for a specific audience, and unless the author is asking for feedback I keep my mouth shut. If it angers and confuses me that much it probably wasn't meant for me in the first place. I've never even considered leaving fb on fanart.

Back in my HP fandom days, I remember leaving a rather sharply critical review for a fanfic, but in my defense, the ficcer made (5th-year) Neville whiny.

Sometimes, but not very often. Usually only when I have a big specific problem with the assumptions/implications/message of the story, not if it's just a case of "this fic sucks because it's bad." If a fic is just generally terrible beyond the capacity of constructive criticism to improve it, I ignore it.

The only times I'm tempted are when a fic is just good enough that it interests me and I see the potential, but there's some specific issue I feel is dragging the whole thing down. Meaning, if the fic doesn't interest me on some level I probably wouldn't bother.

One time I actually did leave a negative comment on a fic - it had a romance set up, and was pulling the thing where out of Our Pairing (say, A/B), A was currently had a different boyfriend (an OC). The plot was decent, and the idea was to have A eventually leave OC boyfriend in favor of B. The problem was, in order to facilitate this the author completely villainized the OC and had them beat A and be verbally abusive and whatnot. I honestly thought that that author was good enough to write a better story, and pointed out in a review that while the story was interesting and well-written, they could have just as easily made the OC more sympathetic and had the relationship break up anyway (what can I say, imo having your otp come together because of no other options isn't saying much for the otp. A choosing B over OC has much more meaning if OC isn't a horrible excuse for a human being...)

I tried to understate the criticism and phrase it in the most constructive way possible. The author got pissed off, and I haven't left anybody much unsolicited concrit since. Then again, that author was something of a drama queen so eh.

I have, yes. One of the kink memes I was on a couple years ago had an author who claimed they wanted constructive feedback, and someone (not me) gave it to them. The author basically bullied that poor girl for it, mocked their comment up and down, and their legion of fans went after them too. So, I ripped their fic apart and detailed everything that was wrong with it, and the finishing blow was that my review was longer than their fic (one of the things they said to the actual reviewer was that usual "well, when you write X number of words, then you can criticize" spiel.) The response wank was ridiculous, the thread was frozen, and the author actually left the fandom in a huff. I don't feel bad about any of it.

There have been other times I've left negative reviews, but that time was the most memorable. Almost all of them have been motivated by a douche!author though.

A+, anon!

Re: Do you ever leave negative reviews?

I don't, for a couple reasons:

1) I'm not an editor/English teacher. I'm in fandom to enjoy things, not analyze them. If I'm not enjoying something, I close out that window and just move on.

2) I assume most fanwriters are like me and don't want concrit. Even when they ask for it. I just don't have time to deal with potential wank storms that always seem to happen when someone goes too far, and I like happy, peaceful fandoms.

3) I always figure fanfic like...evolution, I guess. If someone is a really, really bad writer, they won't get comments/kudos/attention, and either they'll improve, or leave the fandom. I mean, it doesn't always work the way I want it to (certain authors I LOATHE, writing- and characterization-wise, have quite a following, and are thus likely to never stop), but generally speaking, if someone writes really really bad fic they usually go away on their own.

No, and I probably never will...

Nope. I sometimes leave constructive feedback if the author specifically invites it.

On a fic/fanart? No. A business/somewhere like Yelp? Heck yes.

Re: Do you ever leave negative reviews?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Did just the once. Usually, if I don't like a fic I just quit reading and find something else, no big deal. If I do like and finish a story, I always comment with a good review and I see no problem adding a quick mention of a typo or a niggling plot/character issue if I have one - I'll express that in a nice way, couched in praise and listings of what I did like. Balance is usually overwhelmingly on the positive or at worst even.

But OMG this one author.

One of the fandoms I love is relatively obscure, so it's VERY HARD to find fic. And there's this one author who is SUPER prolific, but unfortunately a horrible writer - cliched plots, OOC characterization, poor dialogue and oh so saccharine and fluffy it makes my teeth hurt despite constantly...

So I got pretty used to back-buttoning hard, but sometimes a summary would catch my eye, or a drabble would flit across my radar and I'd accidentally read one.

I finally snapped when she posted a new "story" which was quite literally an old, well-worn joke (yes, as in a joke you'd tell in two minutes at a party, and not a good joke but a real groaner) dressed up in the fandom, complete with angst and feelings and horrible, horrible dialogue. But the last straw was that this thing got a huge flood of kudos.

I left her a what I considered a nasty comment, pretty much calling her out for doing what amounted to an "insert character names and angst here" hackjob.

It backfired, but in the way I expected. She brightly happily replied saying she was so glad I'd read and enjoyed it, thanking me for all my nice and kind words, and how clever I was to have noticed her "reference". Kind of felt cheated- there I was, finally snapping and pouring out my hatred of her work, and there she is, too darn stupid to GET that she's been panned.

Possibly? More likely leave a negative for fic saying what I didn't like and critique for art. I don't know enough about writing to properly critique.
