This, to me, is the most important part of what you've said. I worked at a game store where card tourneys were held, and Yu-Gi-Oh always turned into a certain group of asshole adults gleefully defeating little kids and rubbing their faces in it. We had to ban the game from being played on the premises because it was making the store look so bad.
Be kind to your fellow players, and gracious in both victory and defeat, and you'll go pretty far in proving those stereotypes wrong.
