Beyonce: WTF?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so she sprung a surprise album on everyone. Congrats Beyonce fans, you got a nice unexpected Christmas gift. I get that this is also something famous singers don't normally do, so it's worthy of note, but...in what universe does this make the woman a better candidate for Time's Person of the Year than the first progressive Pope in eons? Seriously?

Well, no, she shouldn't get Person of the Year, but fans will be fans, and Internet will be Internet, and it was pretty awesome and unexpected.

Also, it's only been 50 years since the last progressive Pope - which is still a long time, but it's not eons. John XXIII. "Il Papa Buono". A fantastic guy who shouldn't be forgotten.

I am so sick of people claiming the Pope is awesome. He's really not that progressive if you actually pay attention to what he says. Is he better and more open minded than the previous pope? Yes. But that's not exactly a hard thing to be.

You're not alone in thinking that, anon. Some of his messages are pretty great, but in the end he isn't all that progressive and certainly not as great as people make him out to be.

He's not ultimately that progressive, but he's still awesome. Do I agree with all of his views? No - I disagree with many of them, but the idea that I have to agree with all of someone's views to approve of them or like them strikes me as flawed. I like him because he seems like an original, generous, open-minded human being with a sense of humor, and with compassion, and with a bit of verve, and it's rare to find someone who has that in high places, and someone who is willing to speak out to criticize corruption and other things that need to be criticized. I appreciate those qualities even if he's still got some regressive views. He doesn't pass an ideological test, so what?
