John M Ford's "The Final Reflection", a Klingon perspective novel about a plot to engineer a war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire has been comprehensively jossed by the further development of Klingon culture in TNG and subsequently, but it's still a fantastic bit of worldbuilding (and a good story, too). I have sometimes wondered if the creators of the Cardassians had read it, though, as Ford's Klingon society is not a million miles from Cardassia.

His "How much for just the planet?" is complete crack and possibly the oddest Star Trek novel ever written. You either love it or you hate it. (Personally, I love it, but I am well aware that it's pretty damn strange).
