honestly before this secret/thread I just assumed a/b/o didn't have any women

except for those rare femslash versions I've heard about

those, I assumed didn't have any men

It doesn't, really. They're almost always peripheral characters.

I somehow got linked once to an a/b/o for Madoka Magica that recreated the dynamic with female characters. I don't remember where I found it, and I'm not sure I'd really want to find it again.

To be fair, having the men only as peripheral/background characters is also what Madoka Magica does in canon.

(...I, ah, wrote that fic. It was for the A/B/O Ladies ficathon, and is in the Female Alphas collection, for people who are curious about A/B/O with women in general.)

I got a few paragraphs in. I remember thinking that out of Alpha, Beta, and Omega, all of the characters were exactly matched to which you'd expect them to be based on their personalities. I found it disappointingly tidy--just because someone's dominant in real life doesn't necessarily mean they'll be dominant in the bedroom.

Nobody in the story is in a Dom/sub relationship....

Just because someone's physically an alpha doesn't mean they'll always take the physical or emotional lead in a relationship and/or sex. It's sure not the case in this fic.

And I'm having a hard time sorting any of the characters in this series as 100% "dominant in real life" or not. Especially Homura and Madoka, who go through such strong character arcs, shy and retiring for a significant portion of their lives, but ending up assertive and commanding. There's no category for which they wouldn't break the stereotypes at some stage.

(Meanwhile, Kyoko is clearly more aggressive and demanding than Sayaka in canon, but she's written as a beta while Sayaka is written as an alpha...)

IDK, maybe you have in mind a different set of stereotypes and the story lined up with all of those, but I'm not sure how to get "tidy" out of any of it.

I reread the story's beginning. Apparently I was just skimming the first time--if you didn't make Mami an alpha, you certainly didn't go the expected direction. (I mainly looked at it out of curiosity--trying to read A/B/O fic gives me a feeling like my skin is going to climb off my flesh and hide in a corner. I have the same reaction to that sci-fi series where half the characters have tentacles and the other half need tentacle sex in order to live.)
