and yet somehow Ghibli's cute mascots aren't as terrible as Olaf? frankly, none of Disney's sidekick characters are as bad and pasted-on as Olaf except maybe the alligator from PATF or the Gargoyles in Hunchback.

I don't think Olaf is that bad? Did you actually watch the movie? He doesn't flounce around doing cute things. He's the voice of reason for Anna, and actually serves a purpose to the plot. If you want gimmicky characters look no further than those singing trolls.

He also seems to represent Elsa's loving heart, which has become "Frozen" in fear of her powers.

I think that's because Ghibli's cute mascots aren't constantly butting in, often don't talk, and are overall not out of place in their own universe.

To get a comparison between how Ghibli does them and how Disney does them, compare Jiji in Kiki's Delivery Service in the original Japanese version to Phil Hartman in the Disney dub.
