Bit difficult in canon, when he'd have been hung for the Adair murder.

I don't think he'd have been hanged though. They only managed to charge him with the attempted murder of Holmes, not the actual murder of Adair. Even Holmes admits that his explanation of the Adair murder is conjecture based on entirely circumstantial evidence - although he personally knows it totally had to be Moran, there was no way to prove it.

In fact, the entire reason Holmes set Moran up with the bust in the window was so that he could be sure to get him thrown in jail for a crime, even if he would get off for Adair's murder + everything he did with Moriarty.

And yes. The guy's so damn interesting! He feels like a bit of a missed opportunity, especially given all the bazillion Watson parallels, but I guess that untapped potential makes him more fascinating, just like Professor I-got-one-second-of-pagetime Moriarty.

*fingers crossed that at least in the movie series he and Watson will have some kind of epic showdown plus discussion*
