Bit difficult in canon, when he'd have been hung for the Adair murder.

I don't think he'd have been hanged though. They only managed to charge him with the attempted murder of Holmes, not the actual murder of Adair. Even Holmes admits that his explanation of the Adair murder is conjecture based on entirely circumstantial evidence - although he personally knows it totally had to be Moran, there was no way to prove it.

In fact, the entire reason Holmes set Moran up with the bust in the window was so that he could be sure to get him thrown in jail for a crime, even if he would get off for Adair's murder + everything he did with Moriarty.
