Re: Weird Books
(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 02:25 am (UTC)(link)...this is the concept book curated/produced/whatever by JJ Abrams, isn't it? Is it really that good? I'm thinking they've just updated/upsold a more gimmicky version of those letters-between-two-friends books that were so popular in the early '90s.
Here, this is it (though now that I reread the synopsis, it sounds a tad creepy):

I never read these when they first came out, but there was a lot of hype over them (granted, I was living in the author's hometown at the time, so).
Of course, the very first version was Agrippa, but now I'm really showing how long in the tooth I am......
Re: Weird Books
(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 05:05 am (UTC)(link)I was actually shocked at how good it was! It didn't feel gimmicky to me, and the character development was surprisingly in-depth considering how much of it is in notes. Looking at the trilogy you linked, it sounds slightly similar, but I think it takes it in a whole other direction-- plus you have what's actually a pretty good novel to read as you go. I obviously wouldn't go so far as to say that it's the first book to ever do the "extra correspondence" thing, but it did fit in under weird books and I think it's a pretty fresh take on it. ^^
