I'm surprised as well. I have many issues with the films, but I do consider him to be a terrific Bilbo, and I think that the films suffer from not being more tightly focused on him.

Absolutely! I think the first time I heard about him being a likely option for Bilbo, practically the only thing I'd seen him in was the H2G2 film - and that was all that was required to convince me that he'd be great.

Yeah, was it just me, or did the movie seem not much about him at all? I get there's stuff happening beyond him and it's okay that he's not the center of the action, but to me, he's the most exciting actor to watch and the most interesting, as a contrast in personality and background to everyone else's drama and craziness.

I'm not passionate about Martin Freeman either way and I know he's been accused of always playing "the same" character, but I do like him as Bilbo.

I think the Desolation of Smaug would have been much improved if they'd focused more on Bilbo, with more character development with Thorin's reaction to the gold. The movie felt too scattered.
