So are there a lot of people saying they don't like Freeman as Bilbo? Because I have loved him.

I've enjoyed him as Bilbo as well.

I like his Bilbo too but I haven't seen the second film yet.

I wouldn't expect it to be too different from the first one, they were all filmed at the same time.

Yeah, but he wants to date-rape elves by drugging their drinks. :/

How does this pertain to his portrayal as a movie character?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm honestly surprised that hasn't started any kerfluffle here yet, what with tumblr losing its collective shit over it.

Tumblr loses its shit over everything.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
You don't think that's worth losing at least a little bit of shit over?
kaijinscendre: (Default)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-12-18 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
No. I do not think a joke (a poor one, but a joke nonetheless) in an interview (I would never see) on a Danish TV show (I would never watch) by someone I do not know (and will never meet), is anything to lost my shit over.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
...I'm so confused...

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-12-18 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
that should be "lose my shit over."

Meaning, no I am not going to care one iota about this. It literally affects nothing in the world and I have actual problems to worry about.

Aw man, I wish I didn't go watch the video where he said this. What a fucking bummer. :\

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
....Eh?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Er...can someone explain what this is?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised as well. I have many issues with the films, but I do consider him to be a terrific Bilbo, and I think that the films suffer from not being more tightly focused on him.

"Normal person dragged into crazy situations" is sort of Freeman's thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely! I think the first time I heard about him being a likely option for Bilbo, practically the only thing I'd seen him in was the H2G2 film - and that was all that was required to convince me that he'd be great.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, was it just me, or did the movie seem not much about him at all? I get there's stuff happening beyond him and it's okay that he's not the center of the action, but to me, he's the most exciting actor to watch and the most interesting, as a contrast in personality and background to everyone else's drama and craziness.

I'm not passionate about Martin Freeman either way and I know he's been accused of always playing "the same" character, but I do like him as Bilbo.

I think the Desolation of Smaug would have been much improved if they'd focused more on Bilbo, with more character development with Thorin's reaction to the gold. The movie felt too scattered.

I haven't seen the second film yet either, but so far I think Freeman is the perfect Bilbo. It saddens me to see people saying he has significantly less screen-time.
