But see that's bullshit because girls don't just buy those things. Girls buy action figures. Girls play with action figures. Saying that oh no girls only buy "these" things is stupid and more importantly not true.

Did marketing completely forget the 80s and how many girls had She-Ra action figures? Or Thundercats? Or TMNTs? Or more currently: Pokemon?

Pretty much from the sounds of it.

But the question isn't whether girls buy those action figures; the question is whether an economically significant number of girls buy those action figures. And CN's answer to that question is clearly no.

I think they're mostly likely wrong, fwiw - I think that girls do buy action figures if you make the right ones and don't market them stupidly, and I think it's really dumb to focus on those kinds of toys and not think about branching out of merchandise. But, I mean, they have the statistics, and they know their financial position, and we don't. Maybe they're being total dumbasses. IDK.

They are and they aren't. They aren't wrong when they say an economically signficant number of girls dont' buy what they have out now.

The problem is they are terrified of going outside of their current model where they can correctly predict some gains, and risking a new model that could result in losses.

Of course, doing that too conservatively is why CN's golden age is behind it. For god's sake, they tried to go live action. Remember CN real?

Or it could be that they're not terrified, or stupid - maybe their margins aren't high enough to allow them to start trying to create a new model. Maybe their parent company forces them away from moving to a model that can sell merchandise to girls in favor of going after higher profits right now because that's all their parent company cares about.

My point is that we don't know what their statistics are and we don't know their financial situation. It's really easy, in a vacuum, to say that they should do x, but we don't know if they're not doing it because they're stupid or malicious, or because there's some other factor.

... but that's what Paul Dini was talking about. Did you actually read the interview he had?

Nope. It wasn't linked and I don't care enough to google it.

I am unrepentant!

On average they don't sell as many of those things to girls, no. Pokémon was also a gender neutral show, with cute and noncute creatures alike. Plus, most of the action figures are of the male characters. I've heard things like Batgirl, catwoman, wonderwoman, etc, are in demand, but not enough to make them see enough profit in it I guess.

I WATCHED Batman, superman, Might Max, etc, as a kid, but I never wanted their toys.

Let's take Young Justice. The majority of their viewers were female. Their action figures barely sold. What do you think that says to CN?

Re: The Paul Dini+tumblrVSCN clusterfluff

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I say CN was still only pushing the toys at boys when marketing. But since the shows audience was apparently majority girls, they really should have been marketing for them. It says that CN needs to change it's PR and marketing team because they are obviously not working.

Re: The Paul Dini+tumblrVSCN clusterfluff

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
CN needs to get a marketing team that actually does its fucking job. Remember the shit that happened with Symbionic Titan? It got cancelled because it didn't sell enough toys iirc. They didn't even make any toys and if they did, they sure as fuck didn't advertise them.

CN needs to get rid of Stuart Snyder and hire someone who isn't a fucking idiot.

Re: The Paul Dini+tumblrVSCN clusterfluff

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
CN stated, point blank, that their model is not dolls. They want to sell tops and cheap action figures. If girls aren't going to buy them, then they don't want them watching their shows. CN is obviously not going to take a risk on a different marketing strategy that could end up costing them. At the end of the day money is going to be the thing that moves them. If us girls aren't interested in their model of toys, then they aren't interested in us. Move on.
