Re: Does anyone else not dream? (Loosely inspired by #7)

I have never dreamed (or remembered a dream) in my life. I have never had a nightmare, no matter how scared I was going to bed. If science says I dream anyway, fine, but you couldn't prove that by my experience. I sleep fine and feel perfectly normal, and I'm actually glad I don't dream. I'm very creative as is. I know my dad was utterly baffled when I told him I had never had (or remembered) a dream. He dreams all the time. I don't think my mom remembers her dreams as often but she has them too. I just don't.

In a really round about way, I kind of feel sorry for people who dream. Like, it seems like a lose-lose situation - either you get a nightmare and wake up terrified, or you get a good dream and wake up to be disappointed by the real world. Anything else is...hallucinating vividly every goddamn night. Yikes.

I wouldn't say I feel sorry, since I have no idea what dreaming is actually like. But, I definitely wouldn't want dreams if nightmares came with them. And I get really irritated by people who either refuse to believe me when I say I don't dream (or have never remembered one -- I'm so fucking sick that I have to make that distinction every time I talk about this or someone will jump on me) or they look on my with pity. I'm seriously fine with how things are.

/rant, sorry.

Nah, it's okay, I totally get the frustration. Rant away.

I have remembered a few dreams, but the thing is for me they aren't really good or bad. Because dreams are so rare for me, whenever I do remember them, they freak me the fuck out no matter what they are about. HOW DO PEOPLE DO THIS EVERY NIGHT?!

That said, I can, at least up to a certain degree, sympathize with needing to explain to someone that no, really, I just don't dream (/don't remember them). How? Easy, I go to sleep, I wake up, there isn't really anything in between. Please put that dream interpretation book/dictionary down.

Actually no. While you're right that nightmares are bad and occasionally a dream may lead to disappointment upon waking, "hallucinating vividly every night" is lovely for people who are accustomed to it. It's frequently epically entertaining and hilarious (since dreams are usually nonsensical) and often brings wonderful images, connections, ideas and feelings that are sometimes remembered for a long, long time. I guess it just takes some getting used to.

Don't feel sorry for us unless we ask you to, please. Especially when you yourself admitted that you don't know what it's like for us because you almost never dream. I know you didn't mean it that way, and it's unintentional, but this comment still comes off as really condescending.

Ah, whoops. I meant it more of a joking manner, but yeah, tone can't come across in type in all that noise. So sorry about that. No hard feelings? :)
