Disturbing Songs that you Love Anyway
(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 12:10 am (UTC)(link)Re: Disturbing Songs that you Love Anyway
For me, it used to be "Dobermann" by Raubtier. It's from the POV of an abusive, overly possessive/jealous man towards his partner and any man who might even look at her.
Last chorus in translation:
The goddamn bastards who want you
will see rabies attacks when they face me
Fuck emancipation
to hell with your freedom
I remain him
Your Dobermann
God damn the catchyness and intoxicating aggression of this song, seriously. >.

One of my favorite bands is The Paper Chase. So many songs about murder/death in general. So many weird sounds and unsettling samples, including the Coast to Coast AM Area 51 caller. A concept album about fear/paranoia/conspiracy theories. A concept album about the apocalypse.
They're kind of an acquired taste, and use a lot of dissonance and intentional abrasiveness, but they're boss and I love them and I wish they were still together.

"Oh, sweetness.
Sweetness, I was only joking
when I said I'd like to bash
every tooth in your head."
Damn disturbing but Morrisey makes them work.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 12:55 am (UTC)(link)There are a lot of uplifting songs by Radical Face, actually.
Also, Passage by Vienna Teng. It's from the POV of a woman who died in a car crash and watches her loved ones and the people who knew her cope with and move on after her death. It's both very sad and slightly creepy.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 12:56 am (UTC)(link)Then fight like a girl came out, and I got REAL uncomfortable about some of the implications, then I started looking up other stuff about her, and holy shit it really does seem like she has a major hate on for the dick wielding members of society. I'm totally torn now. FLAG is so catchy, but I feel like a total misanrist listening to it.
---------
Anecdote #2: Amanda Palmer being an arrogant bag of douches has put a real crimp in my ability to enjoy her songs. There is nothing inherently wrong or objectionable in her actual songs, but her being such a dick of a person has become a really problem. I apparently have a problem separating art from artist.

Pretty much everything off of Murder Ballads by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Mein Teil and Wiener Blut by Rammstein (about Armin Meiwes and Josef Fritzl)
Little Girls by Oingo Boingo

Re: Disturbing Songs that you Love Anyway
Is it a song about a vampire? A serial killer? A sexual predator? The video makes it look like the former. Any way, it's creepy.
Angry Johnny by Poe
The singer wants to kill her (abusive) boyfriend? Yeah, that's a bundle of joy.
Cuddly Toy by The Monkees
Davy just sings this song so cheerfully, and yet, if you listen closely, it sounds like he's singing about a girl who'd been (gang/date)raped. Uhhh.
Goodbye, Earl by The Dixie Chicks
Another cheerful song about wife abuse, then the wife and her best friend murdering the husband
and serving him up as barbeque, no, wait, that's Fried Green Tomatoes. And that was another disturbing video, but more because of Earl dancing around after he was dead.Re: Disturbing Songs that you Love Anyway

You started screaming through the duct tape
Don't ever think I'm letting you go
I'm busy digging you a hole
Now you'll be living in a dirt room
Breathing through the straw of your own

Sure, it's about terrifying and deceiving your lover to test him to make sure he's so devoted to you that he values your gift to him more than his own life, and then telling him that you would have killed him if he had been unfaithful...but she does it so sweetly! And it's so cute! And there's playing around with gender roles!

Re: Disturbing Songs that you Love Anyway
Comes to mind immediately: "Collective Suicide" by Terminal Choice (the title should be self explanatory -- but the tune, esp for the club mix, is just so catchy!), "Kiss" by London After Midnight (the song is from the POV of someone who wants his lover to rape him and considers it an act of love), and "Further" by VNV Nation (which is possibly a little less disturbing but it's very nihilistic and one of the lyrics is "I know in darkness I will find you, giving up inside like me").
The music itself is catchy, and for some reason, disturbing lyrics actually make me like them more. Some of these are actually comfort songs for me, which totally boggles people. Feeling suicidal? Listen to a song about suicide. It cheers me up. I don't even know with my brain. Sometimes they actually inspire stories (... which means I have a lot of disturbing stories).
It's sorta weird, because in reality, these are all things that I recognize are NOT OKAY, but I see music as somewhat like fiction... songs are telling a story. It's fantasy, not reality.
That still doesn't stop people from going "WTF" when they see my Spotify on Facebook and find a music list of incredibly disturbing songs mixed in with Disney music or Broadway shows (although some of them can be disturbing in their own right... Phantom of the Opera, anyone?).
