Just try to imagine the events of, say, the first episode where the Silence showed up, only there were no funny rubber masks in black suits, we just saw the reactions and non-reactions of the characters. That would have ramped the terror up WAY more than the whole "Edvard Munch painting in a suit mosters" that we ended up getting.

On a serious note, all those things in one episode sums up exactly the problem of Moffat: He piles it on and piles it on and piles it on, and piles it on, and sacrifices actual good story-telling for brainless entertainment. (At least, if you don't actively THINK for an hour or so, you'll be entertained by the hot mess.)
