His plots are so convoluted and he keeps introducing more mysteries before solving others so that like... wow I just don't give a fuck anymore.

Who cares about the Silence falling? Who cares about Trenzalore? NOT ME.

I mean I ALSO think he's sexist.

But he's also just a bad writer.

So there really aren't any redeeming qualities for me in Moffat Who aside from maybe some of the actors.

He never solves those mysteries though, there's just a bunch of handwaving and then OH SHINY LOOK I AM DISTRACTING YOU WITH THIS NEW SHINY BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FINISH THE OTHER THING I STARTED ISN'T THIS NEW THING SHINY PLEASE SAY IT'S SHINY LOOK LOOK IT'S SO SHINY PLEASE LOVE ME 5EVA

I honestly think he's either a speed freak or he has some rare form of unchecked, undiagnosed ADHD, because that's exactly how his writing comes across as. OK OK I am a broken record I always say that (tag me Moffat's-on-speed!anon if you must).

To be fair, that kind of writing used to work, for sitcoms, back in the 20th century. For a science fiction show, written in the 21st and set in all different time periods? Yeah, not so much.

They need to at least get someone who wrote for DW sometime prior to 1986, for the next showrunner, is what I'm saying.

Wasn't that Silence thing already wrapped up? No? *Looks it up* Oh, I guess not. Shit, I thought they must have put an end to the Silence subplot by now, convoluted really is the name of the...

Wait a minute...

Is it possible Moffat is the Master, and his new plan is to trap the Doctor in a labyrinth of never-ending plot twists from which there is no escape?!

...

No. No it isn't. I'm pretty sure the 'Five-ish Doctors' portrayal of Moffat is closer to the truth.

Oh, right, the Silence. I forgot about the whole "Silence will fall" thing.

I don't think that means it was an interesting plot arc....

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
No fucking kidding. I went bonkers over speculating/finding out what 'he will knock four times' meant, and that was just five words that occasionally popped up. Moffat is just hammering shit to death.

I'm even sick of hearing 'Doctor Who!' now, and that's the name of the freaking show.

I agree so much! The reason that I dislike Moffatt has nothing to do with his sexism and everything to do with that fact that he's apparently trying to turn Doctor Who into some kind of space soap opera, and writes characters that have no real personality (or feel like repeats of previous characters).

Someone once said that Clara isn't a character, she's merely a plot device, and it's so true. She doesn't feel like an actual character to me. I don't care for her in the same way that I did with Rose, Martha, and Donna because the whole series has revolved around the mystery surrounding her and nothing else!

So are all of Moffat's characters, that's nothing new. It ends up coming back to bite him, though, because when he writes gushingly overwrought scenes like the end of The Angels Take Manhattan, where he wants people to care for and empathize with the characters, I just sat there and LOLed at the scenery-chewing all the way through, because the characters were such cardboard props (for VERY thin story-telling) to begin with, that I honestly didn't care or "have teh feels" or whatever it is the kids say on Tumblr these days.

I'm gonna be completely honest, I only watch Moffat!who for the villians.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Meh. They would be fine, if they were one-offs, like they used to be (in Classic Who). Now, it's just endless retreads of the same thing, over and over and over and over and over again. Upthread, someone said the Silence are coming back! I mean, really? They weren't all that much to begin with...in fact, if we had seen them LESS (or not at all), it would have been a lot more effective, and Moffat MIGHT have been able to effectively bring them back. (Despite, y'know, the whole of the human race killing them all.)

Think about it. Just try to imagine the events of, say, the first episode where the Silence showed up, only there were no funny rubber masks in black suits, we just saw the reactions and non-reactions of the characters. That would have ramped the terror up WAY more than the whole "Edvard Munch painting in a suit mosters" that we ended up getting.

I am SO disappointed that we aren't getting a new show runner for the Twelfth Doctor. I love Peter Capaldi, but I'm worried that I'll still end up disliking his episodes because of Moffat's shit writing!

lolol. Whatever. I'm loving every second of Moffat's writing and will miss him when he finally moves on from DW. (also, as a classic Who fan, it's much more in keeping with the original series in theme and style. Now, if we could sneakily get back to 90-minute serials broken into for pieces...)

Secret 10 - Steven Moffat (screenwriter), Doctor Who (TV series)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-19 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Steven Moffat, screenwriter for the TV series "Doctor Who". He is on the set of "Doctor Who", looking back and smiling at the camera. He is a man with light olive skin and short curly dark hair. He is wearing a dark shirt.]

I can see the arguments about him being 'sexist'. But the main problem I have with him is that his episodes (11 mostly) are so fucking boring.

I don't watch Doctor Who to see some overly complicated time orgy that isn't interesting enough to care about. I'd rather see a light-hearted, occasionally with some SHIT GOES DOWN plots, show. Even if it had questionable special effects.

Also, being able to give a fuck about any of the female companions (sans Amy) would be nice too. (what the fuck is up with Clara anyway)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing's up with Clara. That's the problem.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
How could they be boring? After all, he made sure he left "boring asexuals out of his shows.

Eh. I think he could be a great writer, if he just had someone to rein him in. Or have someone else execute and edit his ideas, because even if I can tell he has these big and exciting things to present, they need so much fine-tuning to make sense and have impact imo.

Moffat's like those crack fic writers you see in your fandom, that are very good at churning out chapters and new fic, so you always have something to read. But the quality is so inconsistent, you dread the day he discovers your favourite kink meme and mucks up all the prompts with low-quality fills that he thinks are so great and you guys just don't get how clever he is.

Yeah, I stopped watching because it was boring and I didn't care about any of the characters (female OR male). Lack of interest in characters + lack of interest in plot doesn't leave me with much to go on.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I still remember eyerolling so very very hard at his quote about how the Doctor would need sexuality and what sex is explained to him.

Because it's not like he helped write The Doctor Dances. And had the Doctor explain to Rose how humans "danced" with a lot of other species, and Jack "danced" with anyone he fancied. Nope. The Doctor doesn't know anything about sexuality and LOOK AT THE FLYING SHINY OVER THERE AND A MONSTER WHOOOOO WHOOO SPOOKY!

TBH, yeah. I mean, the sexism and "important" issues bug me, but not anywhere near as much as the fact that the episodes are just frustrating and empty and disappointing. Doubly so because a lot of them actually have a lot of potential.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I am so fucking tired of you people complaining about Doctor Who. CHANGE THE FUCKING CHANNEL THEN.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of get the sense that Moffat really just wants to be a romance writer. Which would be fine if he wasn't continually trying to do big epic space drama (or crime drama *cough*) instead.

(Not gonna lie, though, that two-parter he did from Christopher Eccleston's season, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances... that's my favourite episode. If all his episodes were like that, I'd probably have a higher opinion of him)

I love Moffat, love his stories ... but oh god, Clara. Most one-dimensional, boring and irritating companion to grace our screens since the 70s.

I won't deny the sexism is annoying, but a lot of shows are like that, so at least I'm inured somewhat?

But the NOT MAKING SENSE? I like to be able to follow what's going without a whole lot of speculation on my part. A bit is fine, but at this rate, I'm doing more of it than Moffat is!
