Twerking = Racist

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Article I was reading today casually dropped that bomb today and didn't follow it up with an explanation.

Why is twerking racist??

Because there are people who actually think a dance that has NO religious or cultural significance can be culturally appropriated. A dance. Which was created in the 1980s.

I don't know, why don't you explain the context a bit more. Or link to the article.

You get one clap for actually branching out into two lines, for once.

I thought that wank was long past gone :c I've heard it said it's because it was created by black people so white people shouldn't do it. There was a shitstorm where a guy posted a picture of a dead turkey twerking and people got mad and harassed him to take it down and stuff. I might post a link later.

The way my roommate tells it, it's a specific move popular in the black gay bars of the New Orleans area -- kind of like wearing an ascot or the (mostly completely false) left-ear piercing, or more appropriately voguing. And it would be like the dance competition from the 1920s, to see who could do it the longest and the best, so it was every single person in the room doing it. Which is why so many people are upset about it not getting the recognition. It doesn't look as ridiculous wen everyone in the room is doing the same move.

Buuuut it always makes me think of surra de bunda: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaVCHEc7dQ4

The funniest thing about this is when I saw one of those dumblr kids complain how it's all "cultural appropriation" and everything, then she went on "because, you know, it was the Ying Yang twins who created it, and they're black, so it's cultural appropriation".
And all I could think was "Really? When Miley dances badly, it's cultural appropriation, but when two black guys call themselves the "Ying Yang Twins" it's not? That's not even how you write Yin Yang".
